Condorelli wins 50 Free B final, USC in seventh
USC broke school records in the 200y free and 400y medley relays, the latter finishing third overall, while senior Santo Condorelli twice went under his PR en route to a 50y free B final win on the second night of the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday (March 22).
The Trojans finished seventh after the first full day of the NCAAs with 79 points . Indiana leads with 169 points and is followed in the top 10 by North Carolina State (165), Texas (159), Florida (154), California (152.5), Stanford (116), USC, Michigan (70), Georgia (64) and Louisville (62).
"It was a great night," USC Coach Dave Salo said. "We broke two relay records and Santo was really huge for us today. We've got a big two days ahead of us."
USC kicked off the night with a school record in the 200y free relay as Condorelli joined seniors Dylan Carter and Ralf Tribuntsov and junior Kyle Grissom to clock a 1:15.72 for fifth in the A final, 0.13 under the 2015 school record. The relay earned All-American honors for the fifth time in the last eight years but the first since 2015.
Condorelli opened the race with a PR 18.98, which lowered his best by 0.07 and made him the second-fastest Trojan ever over 50 yards. USC's quartet earned the finals berth with a 1:16.05 out of prelims, Carter leading off with a season-best 19.29.
The Trojans closed the night as the 400y medley relay of Tribuntsov, junior Carsten Vissering, Carter and Condorelli shattered the 2017 school record with a 3:01.83 for third place, 0.66 out of first, 0.07 back of seventh. It lowered the Trojan standard of 3:02.20 set last year in USC's fourth A final in the race in the last six years.
Tribuntsov led off with a 45.01 and was followed by Vissering's 50.90, his first sub 51 split. Carter followed with a 44.71 fly ahead of Condorelli's closing 41.21, both also turning in PR legs.
In prelims, freshman Robert Glinta led off with a 45.00 to lead the relay to a 3:03.02, USC's now-third-fastest time in the race. Glinta's effort, which tied for the second-fastest opening leg in the morning, made him the second fastest Trojan ever in the 100y back.
Condorelli finished a career-best ninth in the 50y free, winning the B final in 18.99 by 0.07, registering a time good enough for seventh in the A final. The A final was won by Florida's Caleb Dressel, a prep teammate of Condorelli's who lowered his American record to 17.63 with the win as the first man under 18 seconds. Condorelli qualified for the B final with a 19.10 in prelims, 11th overall and 0.06 out of a top 8 finish.
Junior Patrick Mulcare, warming up for his back events, swam the 200y IM, finishing 40th (1:46.10). Tribuntsov, in the 50y free prelims, was 32nd in the race in a season-best 19.44.
In diving today, sophomore Henry Fusaro just missed a scoring slot on 1-meter, finishing 17th in prelims with 328.50. Senior Dashiell Enos was 29th (306.90) while senior Dylan Marin was 44th (246.30).
The meet continues Friday and Saturday with prelims at 8 a.m. and finals at 4 p.m. PT.
