This Season: Patrick Mulcare, a two-time 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials semifinalist, is a four-time All-American entering his 2019 senior season and is one of the top 200 backstrokers in the country. A 2016 Pac-12 champion, he can also turn in top times in the 100y back, 200y free and both IM events. He is USC’s record holder in the 200y back and 200y IM.
2018: Mulcare, as a 2018 junior, posted his second straight third-place finish in the NCAA Championships 200y back with a 1:38.43, the second-fastest time in school history behind his school record 1:37.80. In doing so, he became the first Trojan to swim in three straight NCAA Championships 200y back A finals since Jim Wells (1993-95). Mulcare also swam on USC’s 12th-place 800y free relay, was 20th in the 100y back (PR 46.09) and was 40th in the 200y IM (1:46.10) … At the Texas Invitational, he was second in the 200y back (1:39.18), sixth in the 200y IM (1:45.41) and seventh in the 100y back (46.40) … At the USA College Challenge, Mulcare won the 200y back in 1:40.44, breaking the USC pool record in the process … He won nine dual meet races on the year, five in the 200y back … Mulcare was named to the CSCAA Scholar All-American first team as well as to the Pac-12 All-Academic second team.
2017: Mulcare was a two-time All-American as a 2017 sophomore, highlighted by a third-place finish in the 200y back in 1:37.80, the fifth-fastest time ever and the fourth time he lowered his school record in the race in a matter of weeks. It was Mulcare's second straight A final in the race. He also earned All-American honors on USC’s 800y free relay. He just missed a B final with a 17th in the 200y IM, but the 1:44.00 was good enough to break USC’s school record. He was 22nd in the 400y IM (3:44.69) … At the 2017 Pac-12 Championships, Mulcare twice broke his own 200y back record, first lowering it in prelims (1:39.44) and then doing it again en route to second place with a 1:39.37 behind Olympic 200 back champion Ryan Murphy. Mulcare also repeated as a 400y IM finalist with a fifth in 3:45.17 and took 11th in the 200y IM (1:45.00) ... Mulcare won 10 races on the season, six in the 200y back … He earned 2017 Pac-12 All-Academic second team honors.
2016: Mulcare was a Pac-12 champion and earned All-American honors in the 200y back as a 2016 freshman. At the NCAA Championships, Mulcare scored twice, highlighted by his eighth-place finish in the 200y back (1:40.22, 1:39.68 in prelims), just USC's second A finalist in the event since 2000. He scored a day earlier in the 400y IM, finishing 15th (3:43.32, PR 3:42.87 in prelims) and was 26th in the 200y IM (1:44.86). He also led off USC's ninth-place 800y free relay with a PR 200y free of 1:34.16 and swam on USC's 15th-place 400y free relay ... At the Pac-12s, Mulcare broke Trojan Olympic champion Lenny Krayzelburg's USC record in the 200y back -- un-touched since 1997 -- twice en route to the Pac-12 title in the race, USC's first since Krayzelburg won it in 1998. Mulcare won the title in 1:39.64, lowering the school record he broke in prelims with a 1:40.22, the time that finally re-set Krayzelburg's 1997 standard of 1:40.59. Also at the Pac-12s, Mulcare was fourth in the 400y IM (3:43.35) and fifth in the 200y IM (1:44.22, PR). He led off USC's second-place 800y free and 400y medley relays and swam on USC's fourth-place 400y free relay ... He was a two-time semifinalist at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, finishing 10th in the 200m back (1:58.74, .54 out of top 8) and 13th in the 100m back (54.93).
High School: Mulcare graduated from Southridge High in Beaverton, Ore., where he led his school to third place at the Oregon state championships as a junior. He graduated early and did not compete as a senior, focusing on training for 2015 ... At the 2014 Oregon state meet, he broke a 15-year-old record in the 200y IM (1:49.02) and also reset the state standard in the 100y back (48.53) during title swims ... Mulcare was a three-time finalist at the 2015 U.S. Winter Nationals, highlighted by his second-place finish in the 200m back in 1:57.34, 0.10 back of Olympic gold medalist Matt Grevers' winning time. He also took sixth in both the 200m IM (2:0048) and the 100m back (54.50) ... Mulcare won three races at the 2015 Speedo Champions Series in Austin, claiming the 200y IM (1:46.64), 200y back (1:42.21) and 100y back (47.39) ... He represented the U.S. at the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, where he was a four-time finalist, placing fourth in the 200m IM and 200m back and eighth in both the 100m back and 200m free ... Mulcare, who qualified for six events at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials before entering USC, also attended Oakwood High in Dayton, Ohio, before moving to Oregon. While still in Dayton, Mulcare qualified for the 2012 Olympic Trials as a prep sophomore and helped Oakwood win a state title in the 400y free relay. He also set a state record (15-16) in the 400m IM ... He is a former NAG (11-12) record holder in the 200y free relay while with the Dayton Raiders. Club: Tualatin Hills.
