This Season: Carsten Vissering, a 2019 senior and five-time All-American, is one of the top sprint breaststrokers in the country with an NCAA relay title and Pac-12 100y breast crown among his credits, his eyes now set at a run at national individual title.
2018: Vissering was a three-time All-American as a 2018 junior, highlighted by helping USC win the Trojans’ first NCAA title in the 200y medley relay. He posted the fastest-ever 50y breast split with a 22.58 that gave USC the lead halfway through the race as Troy won in 1:21.82, the second-fastest ever winning time at the NCAAs. Earlier on the same day, Vissering repeated as a third-place NCAA finisher in the 100y breast, lowering his school record by 0.12 to 51.28 to become USC’s first repeat All-American in the event since 2000-01. He also helped USC to third in the 400y medley relay, contributing a 50.90 split, his first under 51 seconds … At the 2018 Pac-12 Championships, Vissering just missed defending his 2017 crown in the 100y breast, finishing second in 52.00. He was 18th in the 200y breast (1:56.81) and 42nd in the 50y free (20.54) … Vissering, who was 11th at the 2018 U.S. Summer Nationals in the 50m breast, studied and trained abroad in the fall of 2017 in Brisbane, Australia, before returning to the Trojan squad for the spring semester. He posted four dual meet wins ahead of his postseason success.
2017: Vissering was a two-time All-American as a 2017 sophomore, winning a Pac-12 title while lowering his record in the 100y breast. At the 2017 NCAA Championships, Vissering finished third in 51.40, just 0.72 out of first. He became USC's first All-American in the event since Vladimir Morozov in 2013 and just the second since 2005. Vissering swam the breast leg in USC’s fourth-place 400y medley relay that lowered the school record to 3:02.20. He also swam on USC’s 11th-place 200y medley relay and was 26th in the 200y breast (1:55.15) ... Vissering, at the 2017 Pac-12s, won the 100y breast with a then-school-record 51.45, USC’s first win in the event since 2003. He first lowered the school mark in prelims with a 51.82 that erased Morozov’s 52.01 standard. Vissering also took 14th in the 200y breast (1:56.71), tied for 35th in the 50y free (20.75) and was part of USC’s school-record setting 400y medley relay ... He won the 100y breast seven times as a sophomore, including at the Texas Invitational … Vissering earned 2017 Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention honors.
2016: Vissering competed in three events at the 2016 NCAA Championships as a freshman, scoring with a 16th-place finish in the 200y breast (1:56.00) after he qualified for the B final with a 1:54.73, 0.44 out of the A final. He also was 26th in the 100y breast (53.25) and swam on Troy's 18th place 200y medley relay ... At the 2016 Pac-12 Championships, Vissering blasted a PR 52.41 to finish second in the 100y breast after a 52.50 prelim swim. He next won the B final of the 200y breast with a PR of 1:54.09, just 0.08 off teammate Steven Stumph's winning time in the A final. He was also 26th in the 50y free (20.62) and swam on USC's second-place 200y and 400y medley relays ... He won the 100y breast in USC's wins over Cal and Stanford ... At the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, he was 25th in the 100m breast (1:01.76) and 36th in the 200m breast (2:17.49).
High School: Vissering, who attended Georgetown Prep in Washington D.C., is a prep All-American and a three-time All-Met first teamer. He was a three-time winner in the 100y breast and 200y IM at the Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Championships between 2013-15 ... He is the former NAG (15-16) record holder in the 100m breast and enters USC as the NAG (17-18) record holder in the 200y and 400y medley relays ... He was a two-time winner at the 2015 NCSA Junior Nationals, capturing the 50m (28.23) and 100m breast (1:00.86) and was second in the 200m breast (2:14.65) ... At the 2015 U.S. Winter Nationals he was fourth in the `C' final of the 100m breast (1:03.11) and 39th in the 200m breast (2:21.66) ... Vissering represented the U.S. at the 2015 World University Games and clocked a PR in the 50m breast (27.93), taking eighth ... At the 2014 U.S. Nationals, he was 11th in the 100m breast, 13th in the 50m breast and 20th in the 200m breast and he was second in both the 50y and 200y breast at the 2014 NCSA Junior National Championships ...
