November 04, 2018 | Women's Volleyball, Features
USC women’s volleyball junior opposite hitter Emily Baptista led the Trojans with 18 kills and 12 digs in a win over Oregon State
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The 15th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (18-7, 10-4 Pac-12) defeated Oregon State (11-15, 1-13) in three sets (25-20, 26-24, 25-23) at Gill Coliseum on Sunday, Nov. 4. Despite employing a depleted lineup due to injury protocols, the Women of Troy earned their third straight victory; the eighth sweep of the season; and the program's 1,050th win all-time.

KEY PLAYERS
- Jr. OPP Emily Baptista started the match at OH and finished the day with 18 kills (5e, 45att) on a .289 hitting percentage. She also racked up 12 digs to notch her ninth-career double-double (her first at USC). Baptista also registered her first service ace as a Trojan and set a new USC-high with 20.5 points by adding two blocks (one solo).
- Fr. setter Raquel Lázaro dished out 35 assists and had seven digs, two blocks, and three kills in the match.
- Sr. libero Victoria Garrick led all players with 21 digs. Garrick also served one of the Trojans' three aces and posted six assists. Her total gives her 1,501 career digs and moves her into sixth place at USC, ahead of Alli Hillgren (1,485 digs; 2006-09); and makes her only the sixth USC player ever to reach the 1,500-dig plateau.
- Jr. MB Jasmine Gross collected nine kills (2e, 24att, .292) to go with five blocks and five digs.
- Jr. OH Khalia Lanier contributed 10 kills (3e, 29att, .241) and six digs before she left the match in the second set after colliding with Sr. defender Reni Meyer-Whalley while in the back row. So. OH Brooke Botkin was not available for the match while undergoing concussion protocol.
- For the Beavers, Amy Underdown led the way with 15 kills. Maddie Goings had the double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs. Maddie Sheehan put up 28 assists to go with seven digs, one ace, and one block. Kayla Ellis led the OSU defense with 16 digs.
- In a first set with six tie scores, the Trojans climbed out of a small 13-11 deficit with a big 12-2 run and seized a 23-15 lead, but the Beavers fought back and trimmed the lead to four at 23-19 thanks to a 4-0 run of their own. USC got a seventh kill from Lanier before Baptista's second kill of the opening set sealed a 25-20 win for USC.
- The Women of Troy led by as many as five points twice in the second set, but after Lanier left the court, the Beavers equalized at 22-all. A 5-1 run by OSU put set point on the board for the Beavers at 24-23, but Baptista logged her eighth and ninth kills of the set to turn the tables and gave USC set point at 25-24. A final OSU error handed a 26-24 win to the Trojans.
- Now without Lanier and Botkin, the Trojans went back and forth with the Beavers for nine ties. The lead changed hands five times before USC sealed the sweep with a 25-23 win with each of the final two points coming on kills by Baptista. She scored seven more kills in the third and had eight of her 12 digs.
- USC returns to Los Angeles to host Washington (15-9, 7-7 Pac-12) and No. 18 Washington State (18-6, 9-5) at Galen Center this week. The Trojans take on the Huskies on Thursday (Nov. 8) at 8 p.m. PT on the Pac-12 Networks and then will face the Cougars in a 1:30 p.m. Sunday-matinee. It is Homecoming week on the USC campus.
- USC improved to 55-9 all-time against Oregon State and beat the Beavers for the seventh straight time; the third consecutive win over OSU in Corvallis, Ore.
- The Trojans improved to 53-11 all-time in the state of Oregon and have won seven straight matches there since 2015.
- The Women of Troy earned the program's 1,050th all-time victory.
- USC out-blocked Oregon State, 11-5, and reached double-digit blocks in a match for the 11th time this season.
