No. 13 USC Battles but Falls to No. 25 Washington

Shorthanded with three starters out, the Women of Troy dropped a four-set decision to the Huskies at Galen Center
LOS ANGELES – Without three players including two starting pin-hitters, the 13th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (18-8, 10-5 Pac-12) fell in a hard-fought four-set match (27-25, 23-25, 25-21, 27-25) to No. 25 Washington (16-9, 8-7) at Galen Center on Thursday, Nov. 8. The Trojans had a three-match winning streak snapped and lost at Galen Center for just the third time this season.

- Jr. OPP Emily Baptista played out of position (OH) for the second consecutive match and delivered her second straight double-double with 24 kills (her season and USC high) on .246 hitting (10e, 57att) and set a new career mark with 18 digs. Baptista led all scorers with 27.0 points as she added a solo block and two service aces.
- Fr. setter Raquel Lázaro put up 49 assists to go with seven digs, three blocks, two kills, and two service aces.
- Sr. MB Madison Murtagh started on the right side and tallied her highest output at USC with 10 kills to go with two blocks.
- Jr. MB Jasmine Gross scored 14.0 points with 12 kills (1e, 23att) and a .478 hitting percentage with four blocks and four digs.
- For the Huskies, Samantha Drechsel led with 19 kills. Kara Bajema collected 18 kills and Lauren Sanders added 16. Avie Niece had nine kills and led all players with seven blocks.
- USC led by as many as three points (21-18) and had the first set point of the match at 24-23, but Washington hit .316 and scored 21.0 points en route to a 27-25 win in the opening set.
- Baptista had three kills and a service ace during a 6-1 Trojan run that gave USC an 18-14 lead in the second set, but the Huskies fought back to tie the score two more times at 20-all and 23-all before a Murtagh kill and a UW error sewed up a 25-23 win for the Women of Troy. Baptista had seven of her kills in the second. The Trojans had 18 total kills and hit .275.
- The teams traded barbs to open the third, but a 6-2 Washington run gave the Huskies a 15-11 lead. Washington earned 20 kills and hit .459 to post a 25-21 win and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
- Washington came out the aggressor in the fourth and held the lead for most of the frame, but behind a nine-kill performance from Baptista, USC caught the Huskies at 24-all for the sixth tie of the set. Baptista's 24th kill brought about the 31st tie of the match, but Washington went to Drechsel for back-to-back kills to close out a 27-25 win for the match.
- USC remains home for Homecoming weekend and hosts No. 19 Washington State (19-6, 10-5) at Galen Center on Sunday (Nov. 11) at 1:30 p.m. PT. The Cougars and the Trojans are currently tied for second place in the Pac-12 standings. The match will be shown live on USC's Pac-12+ stream platform.
- USC fell to 41-28 all-time against Washington and lost to the Huskies at Galen Center for the fifth time since 2013.
- The Trojans were without starting outside hitters Khalia Lanier and Brooke Botkin as well as senior defensive specialist Reni Meyer-Whalley. All three were amidst concussion protocols and held out of play.
- USC faced its 16th ranked opponent of the season but fell to 9-7 in matches against ranked foes.
- UW's victory at Galen Center is its sixth all-time, which ties UCLA for second most by a USC opponent. Stanford has eight.
