November 16, 2018 | Women's Volleyball, Features
Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Botkin scored 27 kills in her return to action
TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 14 USC women's volleyball team (20-8, 12-5 Pac-12) overcame No. 24 Arizona (19-10, 8-9) in five sets (30-28, 25-16, 21-25, 24-26, 15-11) at the McKale Memorial Center on Friday, Nov. 16, to produce the team's 20th win of the season; the 33rd 20-win season in program history; and the first-career 20-win season for first-year head coach Brent Crouch. The victory is also USC's 11th over a ranked opponent this season. They are 11-7 in 18 matches against ranked foes.

KEY PLAYERS
- In her return to action after sitting out three straight contests, So. OH Brooke Botkin scored 27 kills (one short of matching her career high) and set a new career mark with 75 attacks. She also had eight digs in the win.
- Out of position at OH, Jr. OPP Emily Baptista had 18.5 points with 14 kills, four blocks (three solo), and a service ace.
- Fr. setter Raquel Lázaro put up 50 assists and had eight digs to go with two blocks, two kills, and two service aces.
- Sr. libero Victoria Garrick recorded a new career high with 33 digs and became the first Trojan to post a 30-dig match since Taylor Whittingham had 33 in 2014; coincidentally also at Arizona (Nov. 26, 2014). Garrick's output also pushes her across the 500-dig threshold for the season and gives her a second-career 500-dig season (526).
- Jr. MB Jasmine Gross had 12 kills (2e, 24att) and hit .417 to go with five blocks (two solo).
- Sr. defender Reni Meyer-Whalley was also back in action after missing the last two matches and collected 11 digs with two service aces. Off the bench, junior setter Cindy Marina scored three of USC's eight total aces.
- For the Wildcats, Paige Whipple led with 21 kills and added 10 digs for the double-double. Kendra Dahlke (who missed the first meeting between USC and Arizona) added 16 kills but hit .079. Dahlke also had the double-double with 17 digs. Setter Julia Patterson delivered the third Wildcat double-double with 48 assists and 13 digs.
- In the first set, the Trojans reached set point at 24-18, but allowed the Wildcats to rip through a 6-0 run to knot the score at 24-all. Arizona took set point once at 26-25, but the Trojans fought through and scored the first-set win on a kill from Botkin and a block by Lázaro and Gross.
- After five ties in the second set, the Trojans raced ahead for a 15-11 lead and never looked back. Gross collected five kills in the frame as the Trojans hit .379 and scored on five service aces to get a 25-16 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
- It was a 13-tie tug-of-war in set three, but Arizona claimed a 25-21 win by capitalizing on USC errors down the stretch. There were 13 more ties in the fourth set, but the Trojans fought back from a four-point deficit twice only to be denied in the end as the Wildcats used back-to-back kills to seal a 26-24 win and force the fifth set.
- The lead changed hands four times in the final set, but Arizona managed to score only four points and had just two kills and two blocks before the Trojans sewed up the win with a 15-11 result. The Trojans had 10 kills and a pair of solo blocks by senior opposite Madison Murtagh and Baptista. Tied at 10-all, USC got kills from Baptista and Botkin before Baptista's solo stuff ended a 50-second-long rally for the 3-2 victory.
- USC heads down the interstate to meet Arizona State (13-16, 4-13 Pac-12) on Sunday (Nov. 18) at 3:30 p.m. PT. The match will be shown live on Pac-12 Los Angeles and Pac-12 Arizona.
- USC improved to 65-22 all-time against Arizona and won its third straight against the Wildcats.
- The Trojans were without starting outside hitter Khalia Lanier who was held out for concussion protocols.
- USC faced its 18th ranked opponent of the season and improved to 11-7 against AVCA Top-25 ranked foes.
- The Trojans improved to 55-24 all-time in the state of Arizona; and to 25-16 in Tucson specifically.
- USC's win keeps the Trojans alone in second place in the Pac-12 standings with only three regular-season matches remaining on the schedule.
- The win is USC's 20th this season and marks the 33rd all-time 20-win season in program history. It also gives USC its first back-to-back 20-win seasons since 2012-13.
- The win also marks first-year head coach Brent Crouch's first-career 20-win season.
