Trojans Lock Down Lions to Take 3-1 Season-Opening Win

The Women of Troy improved to 35-7 all-time in season openers with a four-set win over Loyola Marymount
LOS ANGELES – The USC women's volleyball team (1-0) defeated Loyola Marymount (0-1) in four sets (23-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-11) at Gersten Pavilion on Friday, Aug. 25, to improve to 35-7 in all-time season openers.

The Women of Troy were led by sophomore outside hitter Khalia Lanier who had 13 kills (1e, 29att) with a .414 hitting percentage and nine digs. Junior outside hitter Alyse Ford added 11 kills (3e, 24att, .333) to go with five digs and two blocks. Both Lanier and Ford served the Trojans' only two service aces on the day.

Senior transfer middle blocker Danielle Geiger scored eight kills (0e, 11att) for a .727 hitting performance and added five blocks for 10.5 points in her Trojan debut. Senior opposite hitter Niki Withers tallied nine kills (2e, 19att, .368) to go with three blocks and three digs. Senior right side Brittany Abercrombie knocked down six kills (1e, 24att, .208) and added four digs and five blocks.

Defensively, sophomore transfer Jenna Adams logged five digs in her first action with USC. Junior libero Victoria Garrick finished with six digs. The Trojans started the match with a .200 hitting rate in the first set (11k, 4e, 35att) but settled down to complete the match with a final .400 rate (53k, 7e, 115att) with 19 assists from senior setter Reni Meyer-Whalley and 22 assists by sophomore transfer Cindy Marina. Junior transfer middle blocker Brittany Welsh had three four blocks (one solo) and three kills (.750).

For the Lions, Savannah Slattery led with 13 kills (7e, 35att, .171). Emma Johnson had eight kills (5e, 16att, .188) and Sara Kovac had eight kills (3e, 17att, .294). Kristen Castellanos led all players with 15 digs while Jessie Prichard had 12. Megan Rice had 11 digs.

The Trojans held the lions to a .098 hitting percentage (46k, 33e, 133att) including .000 in the third set (10k, 10e, 39att) and a negative .095 rate in the final frame (6k, 8e, 21att). Despite suffering the loss to the Women of Troy, LMU was able to take the first set. In eight previous meetings, the Lions had never won a set against USC.

Up next, the Trojans return to Galen Center for their first home match of the season. They will host No. 16 Michigan (1-0) at 8 p.m. PT in a match that will be shown live on Pac-12 Los Angeles.

- USC improved to 9-0 all-time against Loyola Marymount, but did drop its first and only set against the Lions in the all-time series' history.
- The Trojans improved to 35-7 in all-time season-opening matches.
- Five Women of Troy saw their first action in a USC uniform but only one as a freshman. Freshman opposite hitter Brooke Botkin played in one set; the first of her collegiate career. The other four first-time Trojans made their debuts following transfers from other schools: junior MB Brittany Welsh (LSU), sophomore S Cindy Marina (Duke), sophomore DS Jenna Adams (Ohio State), and senior MB Danielle Geiger (UC Irvine).
