Ciesla Wins 50, Anchors Relay Victory To Lead USC At Texas Invitational Day 2

Condorelli fourth in 50; Women place three in 200 IM A final.

Freshman Marta Ciesla won the 50y free at the Texas Invitational on Thursday and anchored USC's winning 400y medley relay.

Freshman Marta Ciesla won the 50y free in a personal best and anchored USC's win in the 400y medley relay, junior Riley Scott was third in the 200y IM and senior Santo Condorelli was fourth in the men's sprint to lead the USC women's and men's swim teams during the first full day of the Texas Invitational on Thursday (Nov. 30) in Austin.
 
Ciesla won the 50y free out of lane 8. She claimed her spot in the A final with a prelim effort of 22.71 and dropped that to a PR 22.23 to capture the sprint by 0.05 ahead of Texas' Rebecca Millard. Sophomore Catherine Sanchez was 16th in the B final (22.97).
 
Ciesla ended the meet anchoring behind senior Hannah Weiss, Scott and sophomore Louise Hansson to win the 400y medley relay out of lane 1 in an NCAA A cut 3:29.96, just 2.08 off the school record.
 
USC opened the night with a pair of top 3s in the 200y free relay as Sanchez, Hansson, Tatum Wade and Ciesla took third in the women's race (1:29.57, B cut) while seniors Condorelli, Dylan Carter, Ralf Tribuntsov and junior Kyle Grissom took second in 1:17.66 (B cut).
 
Sophomore Becca Mann followed with an eighth in the 500y free A final (4:44.53, B) while junior Elizabeth Stinson (4:45.37, B) and freshman Isabella Rongione (4:45.46, B) finished 12th and 13th, respectively. Senior Pawel Furtek's 22nd in the 500 (4:24.03, B) topped the Trojan men though freshman Jake Sannem, in the D final, posted a 4:21.37 (B).
 
USC put three women into the A final of the 200IM led by Scott's third-place 1:55.63 while Hansson was fourth (1:56.30, B) and freshman Maggie Aroesty was eighth (1:58.61). Wade won the B final in 1:56.69 (B). Junior Patrick Mulcare took sixth in the men's 200y IM A final in 1:45.41 (B) while sophomore Mark Jurek was 16th (1:48.73, B).
 
Condorelli took fourth in the 50y free (19.48, B) while Carter was second in the B final (19.58, B) with Grissom fifth in the B heat (19.81, B). Tribuntsov won the C final in 19.57 (B).
 
USC's men's A 400y medley relay was disqualified, but the B squad of senior Jon Knox, junior Billy Monjay, Grissom and freshman Justin Nguyen took ninth overall in 3:12.58.
 
The meet continues Friday and Saturday with prelims at 8 a.m. and finals at 4 p.m. PT.
