Â
USC opened up a four-point lead in the first set at 7-3 on a service ace by Lanier, but the Bears hung close to knot the score at nine-all. The teams were deadlocked for a seventh time at 16-all, but Meyer-Whalley served tough to get Botkin a free swing at an overpassed ball to start a big USC run. Back-to-back kills by Lanier got the Trojans out to a five-point lead at 22-17 before a kill by Abercrombie and a block by junior middle blocker Brittany Welsh and Lanier set the Women of Troy up with set point at 24-18. Abercrombie's final kill of the set sealed a 25-18 win for the Trojans, who hit .263 in the first frame (14k, 4e, 38att).
Â
The second set opened up as a back-and-forth affair, but the Trojans used a big 9-1 run to score a seven-point lead at 17-10. USC continued to climb and went up by 10 on a tip-kill by Botkin. Dunn scored a kill on a quick set from Marina for 23-13 and then did the same on a set from Meyer-Whalley for set point at 24-14. The Bears went long on their final swing to sew up a 25-14 win for USC.
Â
Cal took control of the third frame and jumped in front by three at 8-5, but a furious run of USC points on kills by Dunn, Botkin, Abercrombie, and one more by Dunn turned the tables and put Troy on top, 10-9. Dempi did her best to keep the Bears in the match and helped Cal earn a tie at 12-all, but USC had the counterpunches to stay ahead. Eventually, the Trojans led by three at 18-15 before a sudden 3-0 run by the Bears tied the score one last time at 18-all before three kills by Abercrombie effectively put the match out of reach at 22-19. Lanier's crosscourt termination later ended a 25-22 win for the Women of Troy.
Â
Up next, the Women of Troy head to Eugene, Ore., to face Oregon (16-9, 9-8 Pac-12) on Wednesday, Nov. 22, at Matt Knight Arena. The Trojans close out the regular season on Saturday (Nov. 25) at Galen Center when they host crosstown rival UCLA for Senior Night.
