USC junior Briana Gilbreath has earned national acclaim in receiving selection with 2010-11 Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention. The guard leads the Women of Troy in scoring, rebounding, steals and blocks this season. She becomes the first Trojan to earn AP honors since Tina Thompson picked up a spot on the AP All-America Second Team in 1997.
Gilbreath has already made a home for herself among USC's elite, standing as USC's No. 14 all-time scorer and No. 6 all-time in career blocks. This season, she's averaging 14.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 1.3 blocks per game on the way into the WNIT Championship game, which the Trojans will play at Toledo on Saturday (April 2) at 3 p.m. ET.
She's already picked up All-Pac-10 Team honors and a pair of conference Player of the Week awards this year - another claim to fame she shares with Thompson. The last USC player to earn national honors was Shay Murphy, who was a WBCA All-American Honorable Mention recipient in 2007.
More Trojans have also picked up extra Pac-10 honors as well this season. On the academic side of things, three Women of Troy have earned accolades from the conference. A redshirt junior, guard Jacki Gemelos leads the way as a Pac-10 All-Academic First Team selection as she holds a 3.5 GPA as a grad student pursuing a master's of gerontology. Briana Gilbreath also has an affinity for academics, having earned Pac-10 All-Academic Second Team honors. Senior center Kari LaPlante wraps up her final year with another set of honors on the Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention list - her third as a Trojan.
For the first time, the Pac-10 also opened up awards lists to be selected by Pac-10 media members. That honor roll was led by Briana Gilbreath as the Pac-10 Media Defensive Player of the Year. She and Ashley Corral also have a spot on the Pac-10 Media All-Pac-10 Team, with Cassie Harberts highlighting the Pac-10 Media All-Freshman Team.
