Women's Basketball Closes Season at Home

LOS ANGELES - The Women of Troy (7-18 overall, 3-13 in conference) will host Arizona (16-9, 11-5) at 7 p.m. on Thursday (March 4) in the Sports Arena and Arizona State (11-14, 5-11) at 7 p.m. on Saturday (March 6) at the Lyon Center to finish the season.
Arizona - The Wildcats (16-9, 11-5) are led by junior forward Angela Lackey, who averages 13.7 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game. Junior guard Felicity Willis is averaging 12.4 ppg and 3.7 rpg. USC is 33-8 in the all-time series with Arizona. USC lost the last meeting between the teams, 73-63, earlier this season.
Arizona State - The Sun Devils (11-14, 5-11) are led by freshman forward Theresa Jantzen, who is averaging 11.3 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game, while junior center Rachel Holt is averaging 10.2 ppg and 5.0 rpg. USC is 39-3 in the all-time series with Arizona State, including a 67-54 victory over the Sun Devils earlier this season. The Women of Troy have won the last 11 meetings between the teams.
LAST game - USC was defeated by Washington State, 61-53, on Saturday (Feb. 27). Junior forward Tiffany Washington posted 15 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, including 11 offensive rebounds. Senior center Adrain Williams had 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while freshman Tiffany Elmore added eight points with nine rebounds. USC had a season-high 53 rebounds for the game.
USC IN THE PAC-10 - The Women of Troy have three players in the top 10 in rebounding in the Pac-10 Conference: senior center Adrain Williams holds third, junior forward Tiffany Washington is fifth and sophomore forward Tashara Carter is ninth. USC is second in the Conference in offensive rebounds and has the second-best turnover margin in the Pac-10.
MISSING IN ACTION - The Women of Troy have been shorthanded since the preseason began for a variety of reasons. Senior guard Kristin Clark suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and will not return to the line-up for USC. Clark had surgery on her right knee on Friday (Jan. 22). The injury occurred in the first half of the Arizona game. Clark holds the USC record for three pointers made in a career along with Tammy Story (tied at 110) and had just passed the 200 career steal mark, finishing with 203. Clark was the fourth guard to leave the USC line-up this season. Junior guard Kiyoko Miller sprained her right shoulder in a scrimmage forcing her out of the line-up. Junior guard Erica Mashia will not be returning to play due to an ACL injury. Mashia was expected to make a miracle comeback this season after being forced to miss the 1997 and 1998 seasons with a career-threatening hip injury. She was a Pac-10 freshman team selection in 1996 and is known for her abilities behind the three-point arc and free throw line. Junior guard Kim Clark, a midfielder for USC's soccer team, broke her leg in a soccer game (Nov. 1) and will be out for the season.
CHRIS GOBRECHT - Twenty years after graduating from USC in 1977 to embark on a coaching career, Gobrecht returned to campus to take the helm of the Women of Troy basketball program. On May 8, 1997, she replaced Fred Williams, who left after two years as USC's coach. Gobrecht, 42, who played basketball and volleyball while at USC, has been a head coach at the Division I level for 20 years, having guided programs at Cal State Fullerton (six years), Washington (11) and Florida State (one). She was a two-time Pacific-10 Coach of the Year (1987-88) with the Huskies and has amassed a 351-236 career mark. She reached the 300-victory plateau on Jan. 19, 1995, at the age of 39, making her one of the youngest coaches to do so in America. Gobrecht is the second winningest coach in the Pac-10 after 12 years in the conference with a record of 156-95. She has also coached at the national and international levels. She was an assistant for a 1990 USA Basketball select team which traveled to Czechoslovakia and Italy. In 1989, she led the East Team to a silver medal in the U.S. Olympic Festival. Under her maiden name of Chris Geiger, she was a three-year starter on USC's basketball team. She also played volleyball for the Women of Troy for two years. She received her bachelor's degree in public affairs from USC in 1977.
Adrain williams - Senior center Adrain Williams is USC's leading scorer, averaging 14.9 ppg, 8.4 rpg and 1.48 apg. Williams is back in the line-up after being out five games with a right ankle injury. In the Pac-10, Williams is fourth in scoring, third in rebounds and second in blocks. She had 13 points and eight rebounds against Washington State (Feb. 27) and her ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds against Washington (Feb. 25). Against UCLA (Feb. 20), Williams had 15 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. She posted 13 points and seven rebounds against Stanford (Feb. 14) and 14 points against California (Feb. 12). She had 19 points and eight rebounds against Stanford (Jan. 14). Against Arizona State (Jan. 2), Williams had a season-high tying 22 points and eight rebounds and had 16 points and nine rebounds against Arizona (Jan. 4). Williams earned All-Pac-10 honorable mention honors during the 1997-98 season.
Tiffany washington - Junior forward Tiffany Washington is a force in the paint at both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. She is averaging 8.8 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. She is fifth in the Pac-10 in rebounding. Washington had 12 points and nine rebounds against Washington (Feb. 25) and had her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 18 rebounds against Washington State (Feb. 27). Washington collected 10 points and four rebounds against UCLA (Feb. 20). She had nine points and 13 rebounds against California (Feb. 12). She had her second double-double against Washington (Jan. 30) with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Washington had 14 points and 11 rebounds against Washington State (Jan. 28). In the game against Oregon, she collected six points. Washington started in 24 games for the Women of Troy in the 1997-98 season and collected 8.9 ppg and 6.1 rpg.
tashara carter - Sophomore forward Tashara Carter continues to hold the starting position she earned as a freshman last season. She is averaging 9.4 ppg and 6.1 rpg this season. She is ninth in the Pac-10 in rebounding. Carter posted six points and seven rebounds against Washington (Feb. 5) and seven points against Washington State (Feb. 27). Carter collected 17 points and seven rebounds against Stanford (Feb. 14). She had her fifth double-double of the season against California (Feb. 12), with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She had a season-high 17 points and six rebounds against Oregon (Feb. 6). Carter posted 16 points against Washington (Jan. 30) and had 13 points and 10 rebounds against Washington State (Jan. 28). Carter had 15 points and five rebounds against UCLA (Jan. 23). In 1998, Carter was an All-Pac-10 freshman team honorable mention selection.
tiffany elmore - Freshman guard Tiffany Elmore has earned a starting guard position for the Women of Troy this season. She is averaging 12.0 points per game and 4.3 rebounds per game. She had 11 points and six rebounds against Washington (Feb. 25) and eight points with nine rebounds against Washington State (Feb. 27). Elmore had 11 points and nine rebounds against UCLA (Feb. 20). She collected 10 points against Stanford (Feb. 14) and had a career-high tying 24 points and eight rebounds against California (Feb. 12). Elmore posted 13 points and seven rebounds against Oregon (Feb. 6). Elmore had 20 points against Washington (Jan. 30) and 12 points against Washington State (Jan. 28). She collected a team-high 16 points against UCLA (Jan. 23). Elmore had 24 points and five rebounds in the game against Drake (Nov. 25). As a 1998 prep senior, Elmore was a Student Sports All-State first team selection and the Sacramento Bee's All-Area Player of the Year.
Carmen Krause - Freshman forward Carmen Krause is making a name for herself as a starter, providing size and quickness in the paint and a knack for rebounding. She is averaging 3.8 ppg and 3.0 rpg. She had four points against Washington (Feb. 25). Krause contributed nine points in the game against UCLA (Feb. 20). She collected four points against Stanford (Feb. 12) and had four points and three rebounds against California (Feb. 12). She collected nine points and six rebounds against Washington State (Jan. 28). Krause comes to USC from Prescott, Ariz., where she was a 1998 All-State second team selection and All-Area Player of the Year.
Camille norwood - Freshman guard Camille Norwood adds good ball handling skills and a nice offensive touch. She has taken over a starting position for the Women of Troy in the last seven games. Norwood is averaging 4.0 ppg and 1.12 apg. She collected three points against Washington (Feb. 25) and four points with five rebounds against Washington State (Feb. 27). Norwood had nine points against Stanford (Feb. 14) and four points against California (Feb. 12). She had a career-high 12 points against Oregon State (Feb. 4) and nine points against Oregon (Feb. 6). She posted five points and three steals against Washington (Jan. 30). Norwood was a All-City Section 4-A first team selection and was named 1998 L.A. Times Central City Player of the Year. She averaged 24.5 ppg as a senior at Washington HS (Los Angeles, Calif.).
Whitney houser - Sophomore forward Whitney Houser adds depth to USC with her quickness and hustle on the court. She is averaging 3.9 ppg and 2.3 rpg this season. Houser collected four points and three rebounds against Washington (Feb. 25). She had five points against UCLA (Feb. 20). Houser had six points and five rebounds against Oregon State (Feb. 4). She contributed seven points and three rebounds against Oregon (Jan. 8). Houser had four points against Arizona State (Jan. 2) and had a season-high 15 points against Arizona (Jan. 4). In the 1997-98 season, Houser averaged 5.1 ppg and 3.0 rpg.
Aimee Copp - Junior forward Aimee Copp transferred to USC from Fullerton College and has played in six games for USC so far this season. Copp is averaging 2.0 ppg. Copp had four points against Washignton (Jan. 30) and Washington State (Jan. 28). She posted two points and five rebounds against UCLA (Jan. 23). She contributed five points and three rebounds against Oregon State (Jan. 10).
adria sneed - Senior forward Adria Sneed continues to serve as a reserve and is a solid rebounding force. She had four points against Oregon State (Feb. 4) and two points against Oregon (Feb. 6). Sneed posted four points and four rebounds against UCLA (Jan. 23). In her junior season with the Women of Troy, Sneed averaged 2.0 ppg and 1.7 rpg.
Antoinette Polk - Sophomore guard Antoinette Polk has been added to the roster for USC. Polk played basketball in the 1996-97 season and plays volleyball for the Women of Troy. She averaged 2.1 points per game and 0.8 rebounds per game in 1996-97. Polk is known for her leaping ability and she can dunk on a regualation basketball hoop. She earned All-State and Sacramento Player of the Year honors in basketball as a senior at El Camino HS in Sacramento, Calif.
KRISTIN CLARK - Senior guard Kristin Clark has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee and is out of the USC line-up. The injury will end her career as a Women of Troy guard. Clark had an average of 14.5 ppg, 2.4 rpg and 3.45 apg after playing in the first 11 games of the season. Clark was USC's leading scorer in the 1997-98 season, averaging 16.0 ppg. She is tied with Tammy Story for career three pointers with 110. Clark was a 1998 All-Pac-10 selection.
Kiyoko miller - Junior guard Kiyoko Miller sprained her right shoulder after playing in four games this season, she will not return to the line-up this season. She had been averaging 3.8 ppg for USC this season. Miller started in 21 games for USC in the 1997-98 season, averaging 7.5 ppg.
