Los Angeles -- Led by senior Danielle Golay's 12 points, USC defeated Sacramento State, 84-42, this afternoon at the Lyon Center. The Trojans held the Hornets to 28.8 percent shooting, and the ninth-fewest points by a USC opponent in program history.
The Women of Troy improve to 4-2 this season, while Sacramento State falls to 2-5 in its third consecutive loss.
Troy had three players finish in double-figures, including Golay, junior forward Tashara Carter (11 points) and freshman guard Lauren Smith-Hams (11 points). In only her second starting assignment of the season, Smith-Hams hit 3-of-6 from behind the arch, and forced two turnovers in the game. Senior forward Tiffany Washington nearly missed a double-double by contributing nine points and nine rebounds, and center Denise Woods led the team with 12 boards.
Sacramento State was led by guard Sephora Scoubes who tallied 11 points (4-of-10) with two steals and one block.
The Trojans began the game on a 12-0 run in just the first three minutes of play. After posting their first eight points in the contest, the Hornets were held scoreless for 6-minutes, 12-seconds. A layup by Golay at the buzzer gave USC a 27-point advantage, to enter halftime with a 46-19 lead. In the second half, Sacramento State was unable to reduce the margin, as the team's first field goal came after eight minutes of play. Troy led by as many as 51 points following a layup by Woods with 3:20 remaining on the clock, as the Women of Troy stung the Hornets, 84-42.
"We played intelligent and good team basketball," Head Coach Chris Gobrecht said. "We took a businesslike approach and I was happy with our performance through most of the game."
USC will prepare to face Baylor at home on Sunday, December 19. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.
