Justin Chang is in his second season (2019) as the technical coordinator for both the USC men’s and women’s volleyball programs.
Chang first arrived at USC as a graduate manager for the women’s program in the fall of 2017 and also provided DataVolley support for the men’s team.
With Chang on staff, the Women of Troy made their 27th and 28th (2018) consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament and advanced to the regional championship match in 2017. The men’s program advanced to the second round of the 2018 MPSF (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) tournament and earned a berth in the 2019 NCAA championship.
Chang also provides analytical assistance to the beach volleyball program. The 2019 squad won the Pac-12 championship and finished as the NCAA runner-up.
Chang served as a DataVolley technician for the 2018 U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryout and has worked at the U.S. High Performance tryouts as a court coach since 2016. Chang has served as a consulting technical coordinator with the U.S. Women’s National Team Pan American training group, and was with the squad for back-to-back gold-medal finishes in the Pan Am Cup (2018 and 2019).
Additionally, Chang is part of the technical staff for the Southern California Region (SCVA) Boys and Girls’ High Performance programs. The boys squad won gold in the youth international division and silver in the youth national division of the 2018 High Performance Championships.
In the summer of 2019, Chang took up a position with the National Volleyball Association (NVA) men’s semi-pro domestic league in the area of live statistical tracking.
Previously, Chang served as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Houston from 2016 to 2017, where he was responsible for training defensive specialists and the development of opponent scouting. While in Houston, he also coached for two seasons with Houston Skyline Juniors Volleyball Club. As a head coach, his 16-2 team earned a top-10 finish at the 2018 Lone Star Regional.
Chang is originally from Potomac, Md. He was a student manager and practice player at Baylor University, and graduated magna cum laude with degrees in economics and finance in 2015. Outside of volleyball, Chang worked for Accenture Consulting for two years as a management consulting senior analyst. He is currently pursuing a master’s of public policy at USC’s Price School of Public Policy and is scheduled to graduate in May 2020.
