He was named to the Fresno Bee All-Star Team in his senior season at Clovis (Calif.) High after going 7-0 in 62 1/3 innings with a 2.70 ERA and 84 strikeouts...he also batted .397 with six home runs and 20 RBI...earned all-conference and all-city first team honors in his junior and senior seasons...threw a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts in his sophomore season...was a two-time all-conference selection on the football team as a defensive end.
