USC Lacrosse Tops Arizona State in 16-14 Road Win

TEMPE, Ariz. – The USC lacrosse team (4-2) collected a 16-14 win over Arizona State (2-3) at Sun Devil Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 28.

- Jr. attacker Reese Robinson had a career-high four goals (second-career hat trick) and finished with a career-best six points (two assists) to lead USC in scoring.
- So. goalie Ellie Thomas went wire-to-wire between the pipes and racked up a career-high 13 saves in the win.
- Redshirt Jr. midfielder Hannah Barron recorded her second-career hat trick and finished with three goals, two assists, and picked up a ground ball.Â
- Redshirt Jr. midfielder Hollis Mulry scored two goals, picked up a pair of ground balls, and had an assist.
- Jr. attacker Emma Bunting dished out two assists and scored a goal.
- Sr. midfielder Casey Roberts scored a pair of goals.
- For the Sun Devils, Lydia Oldknow scored five goals including the final three for ASU in a 4-0 run during a late comeback. Jordyn Behar led all players with eight points (2g, 6a). Anna Viglione won 15 draw controls.
- The Sun Devils out-shot the Trojans, 34-32, and had more shots on goal (27-20), but did the lion's share of their damage in the fourth quarter. ASU also won the center circle by a 21-11 edge and had fewer turnovers than the Trojans, 15-8. USC came up big in goal where Thomas had 13 saves to the four by the Devils' keeper.
- Barron and Fravert scored back-to-back goals to open the game for USC, but Arizona State evened the score with 4:52 left to play in the first quarter. Barron found Alex May for the goal to put USC back in front and then Anna Regan scored to put the Trojans ahead, 4-2, to end the opening frame.
- USC's offensive onslaught came next as the Trojans scored the first seven goals of the second quarter to make it a 9-0 run for an 11-2 lead when the dust had settled. ASU's Claire Beucher scored two back-to-back to trim USC's lead to seven, 11-4, at the halftime break.
- Arizona State scored the first three of the third quarter to make it a 5-0 run and pulled to within four of the Trojans at 11-7. Mulry and Robinson added goals before the third would end but ASU answered to stay within four to open the fourth.
- USC got goals from Fravert and Robinson to start the fourth quarter and built up another six-goal lead at 11:20. Oldknow scored one at 9:58 to keep the Devils alive before Bunting dished to Roberts who scored her second goal with 9:23 left to play to make it 16-10. From there, the Sun Devils pushed back and scored the last four, one from Behar and three straight from Oldknow to close within two at 16-14, but the USC ride caused the final turnover to hold on for the two-goal win.
- USC plays its next four games at Rawlinson Stadium and begins with a 6 p.m. PT game on Wednesday (March 4) against San Diego State. The Trojans will host Niagara for a first-time meeting of the two teams on Sunday (March 8) at 1 p.m. Both games will be shown live on Big Ten Plus.
- USC improved to 14-2 all-time against Arizona State and has won the last six over the Sun Devils. The Trojans also go to 7-1 against ASU on the road.
- The Trojans move to 7-1 all-time in the Copper State.
- USC defeated ASU by a 16-14 count for the second straight year and for the third time in the head-to-head series.
