The Trojans bested their first conference foes 12-2 during the opening weekend in L.A.
LOS ANGELES – USC men's tennis cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Indiana Hoosiers on Sunday afternoon, rounding out their inaugural weekend of Big Ten play with a pair of conference wins.
The Trojans continued their hot streak in doubles play, winning their ninth of twelve doubles points this season. The freshman duo Matteo Morazzi and Nathan Trouve struck first on court three with a 6-1 win, while the reunited pair of senior Peter Makk and graduate student Tristan Bradley locked in the point with a 6-3 win on center court.
Morazzi continued his impressive weekend in singles play, claiming USC's second point of the match with a straight-set victory on court four. Morazzi dropped just a single game en route to winning his sixth straight singles match. No. 112 Trouve followed quickly behind, taking a 6-4, 6-0 victory on court two to put the Trojans up 3-0.
Freshman Connor Church clinched the match for USC, sailing to a 6-3, 6-2 victory on court six. The victory gave Church his tenth overall victory this season and his third in dual play. With the rest of the courts playing out their matches, No. 28 Makk was the next to score for the Trojans with a dominant 6-0 score in his third set, giving them a 5-0 lead.
On court three, sophomore Volodymyr Iakubenko won through a third tie-break, scoring the sixth point for USC. Court five wrapped up the action for the match, with senior Karl Lee narrowly falling in straight sets to give Indiana its sole point of the match.
With back-to-back wins in conference play under their belt, the Trojans will turn their attention to UCLA for part two of the Crosstown Showdown at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 14 at David X. Marks Stadium. USC will hope for similar results as it beat the Bruins, 4-3, on their home court last time around.
