February 15, 2025 | Men's Tennis
Senior Peter Makk secured the win against No. 25 Pepperdine as he provided the clinching point in a third set tiebreaker
MALIBU, Calif. – The Trojans (4-3) senior Peter Makk closed out the match in a tiebreak, as they took down No. 25 Pepperdine (5-3, 1-0 WCC) 4-3, on Saturday, Feb. 15.
In the final match of the afternoon, Makk pushed his win streak to three as he took down the Waves Edward Winters in a court-one third set tiebreaker, 6-2, 6 (5)-7, 7-6 (4), to give USC the top 25 upset.
The Trojans found a way in this one, as they earned their first top-25 victory of the season after winning four of the six singles matches. USC was swept to start the match as Pepperdine took home the doubles point with wins on court two and three. The Waves would further control the lead with the first win of the dual at court six, as David Fix took down graduate student Tristan Bradley, 6-3, 6-1.
The Trojans started in the hole 0-2 but found their momentum with the success of their freshman. Freshman Matteo Morazzi was the first on the board, finishing soon after Bradley with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Morazzi's doubles partner, freshman Nathan Trouve accomplished a new achievement in his young career, as he took home his first ranked win. Trouve went up against Pepperdine's lone ranked singles competitor, No. 32 Maxi Homberg, and took home the victory, 6-3, 7-6 (6). USC would finally push out in front with a win on court four from senior Karl Lee. Lee defeated his opponent 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 and put the Trojans one point away.
As court No. 3 finished out, the Waves would tie it up as the match results would come down to court No. 1. Makk and Winter were neck and neck throughout, as the Pepperdine sophomore came out with the initial edge 5-4 set three. After that point, both players would take turns winning a set before Makk came through in the end with three straight points in the tiebreak to confirm the 4-3 victory.
