USC Men’s Tennis Initiates Part One of the Crosstown Showdown
February 21, 2025 | Men's Tennis
No. 25 Trojans take on the Bruins in the first of a two-part rivalry on Saturday in Westwood
LOS ANGELES – No. 25 USC men's tennis (5-3) prepares for part one of the historic crosstown showdown as it travels across L.A. and takes on rival UCLA (2-5) in a nonconference matchup at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 22 in Westwood at the Los Angeles Tennis Complex.
Fresh off a top-25 victory at Pepperdine, the Trojans have officially entered the top 25 and are riding a two-match win streak. In Malibu, USC flourished in singles play, coming back from a 1-0 deficit to win across four singles courts, including a late-match tie-break victory by senior No. 34 Peter Makk on the center court.
The Trojans are hoping to continue riding this momentum, as only two dual matches remain before Big Ten play. Alongside Makk, the Trojans have seen a series of impressive wins from the new freshman duo Matteo Morazzi (5-1 in singles) and No. 82 Nathan Trouve (4-2 in singles). Trouve recently was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after defeating then-No. 32 Maxi Homberg in two sets. Senior Karl Lee is also in fine form, sitting at 4-1 in singles play this spring.
This season, the Bruins are just 2-5 overall and enter the matchup on a three-game losing streak, including a 4-2 defeat at Pepperdine. However, UCLA has five ranked singles players–No. 13 Spencer Johnson, No. 49 Rudy Quan, No. 78 Emon Van Loben Sels, No. 99 Aadarsh Tripathi and No. 118 Kaylan Bigun – and one ranked doubles pairing in No. 15 Tripathi and Alexander Hoogmartens.
The first serve at UCLA will occur at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 22. For live updates, follow along HERE.
