USC’s Avery Howell Named Big Ten Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week
January 27, 2025 | Women's Basketball
It’s the first conference honor for the freshman guard, who scored a career-high 18 points at Purdue.
USC guard Avery Howell has earned her first conference award with her selection as the Big Ten Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week today (Jan. 27). She set new career highs in several categories during USC's win at Purdue last week, helping the Trojans to their 14th consecutive win and an 18-1 overall record.
Howell's career-high 18 points scored against the Boilermakers included new high marks for her with four 3-pointers made and a perfect 6-for-6 effort from the free-throw line. Howell also notched a career-high three steals in USC's 79-37 win at Purdue. She led all scorers in the game with her point total and threes landed — this four 3-pointers helped account for 11 total by the Trojans to mark the most three USC has made in a Big Ten game this season and tying the second most in any game this season.
USC's 18-1 start to the season is its best since the 1981-82 season, and its 8-0 start in conference play is its best since the 1993-94 season. USC's current 14-game win streak is its longest win streak since the 1983-84 season. (14 games, so a tie, next longest is 1982-83).
Howell is the third Trojan to pick up a weekly honor from the Big Ten, joining JuJu Watkins' four Big Ten Player of the Week awards and Kiki Iriafen's selection to the Weekly Honor Roll.
Howell and the Trojans now set up for three games in a week's span, beginning with a home game against Minnesota on Thursday (Jan. 30) at Galen Center. From there, USC will play at Iowa on Sunday (Feb. 2) and at Wisconsin on Feb. 5.
