January 13, 2025 | Women's Basketball
It’s the fourth selection for Watkins from the conference and first by Naismith, going along with another USBWA national award selection.
USC guard JuJu Watkins has locked in her fourth selection as Big Ten Women's Basketball Player of the Week while also picking up her first Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy Player of the Week award. Watkins averaged 28.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals, 2.5 assists and 2.0 blocks, shot 58.8 percent (20-of-34) from the floor and was 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the free-throw line in USC's two Big Ten wins in the last week. Watkins also earned another set of national honors with her fourth selection as a USBWA Ann Meyers Drysdale Player of the Week.
The only player to earn multiple Big Ten Player of the Week honors this season, Watkins was instrumental in helping USC extend its winning streak to 12 in a row after beating No. 8 Maryland 79-74 on the road and Penn State 95-73 at home in the past week. With 35 points and 11 rebounds vs. Penn State, Watkins recorded her third double-double of the season and 12th of her USC career. She has now scored 30 or more points in 18 of her 51 career games at USC, with 20 or more points scored in 43 games.
Watkins also shot a career-best 86.7 percent from the floor on a 13-of-15 effort vs. Penn State. Against No. 8 Maryland, Watkins scored 21 points and had nine rebounds in USC's second road win over a top-10 ranked opponent this season.
With blocks in both games, Watkins has recorded at least one block in seven straight games. And with 3-pointers made in both wins, she has hit at least one three in USC's last 12 games.
Watkins has scored in double digits in all 17 USC games this season, and her 18 30-point games ranks third on USC's all-time list, trailing only Cheryl Miller (25) and Cherie Nelson (20).
Watkins and the Trojans go back on the road later this week, off to Bloomington to take on Indiana at 12 p.m. ET on Sunday (Jan. 19). From there, USC heads to pay a visit to Purdue on Jan. 22. Both Big Ten clashes will mark USC's first-ever visits to the Hoosiers' and Boilermakers' home courts.
