Trojans Off To Strong Start At 2024 Pac-12 T&F Championships

Nelson in javelin throw and Stevenson and Hope in long jumps all take second place
Leif Nelson took second in the men's javelin throw, JC Stevenson placed second in the men's long jump and Alyssa Hope finished second in the women's long jump during the first day of the Pac-12 Track & Field Championships at Potts Field in Boulder, Colo. today (May 10). After the first day of the 2024 Pac-12 Championships, the USC men's team has 21 points and are in second place and the women's team has scored 13 points, good for sixth place. Ten other Trojans advanced to event finals on Sunday.
- Leif Nelson took second in the men's javelin throw with a mark of 236-4 (72.03m) to earn the USC men's team its first eight points in the meet. His best throw came in the final round.
- JC Stevenson placed second in the men's long jump with a leap of 25-1.75/7.66m (+0.1). That jump came in his first attempt and was his only legal jump of the competition and gave him the lead until the end of the fifth round. Johnny Brackins Jr. had a best jump of 24-11.75/7.61m (-0.6) to finish fourth. Stevenson (8) and Brackins Jr. (5) earned the USC men's team 13 points. Brackins Jr. won the long jump title last season and Stevenson took second.
- Alyssa Hope placed second in the women's long jump with a best leap of 20-6.50/6.26 (-1.7) in her fifth attempt. Hope earned the USC women's team eight points in the team competition.
- Sara Zabarino scored the first five points for the USC women's team by placing fourth in the women's javelin throw with a best mark of 165-6 (50.44m). She was one centimeter our of third place. Kamryn Elgersma set a personal best with a throw of 152-5 (46.47m) to reach the finals, but she finished ninth.
- Johnnie Blockburger won his men's 200m heat with a time of 20.78 (-1.2) which was the fastest qualifying time to Sunday's final. Max Thomas also won his head to advance to the final and was fourth overall with a time of 20.96 (-2.3).
- USC had three women's athletes qualify for Sunday's 200m final. Christine M. Mallard won her heat and was second overall with a time of 23.19 (-1.5), Jassani Carter won her heat and was fourth overall with a time of 23.37 (-0.9) and Madison Whyte won her heat and was fifth overall with a time of 23.41 (+0.2).
- Jasmine Jones had the top qualifying time in the prelims for Sunday's 400m hurdles final, winning her heat with a time of 56.47. Placing second in the same heat and qualifying fifth overall to the finals was Rae-Anne Serville with a time of 57.75.
- USC's Tamaal Myers, Johnny Brackins Jr. and Yougendy Mauricette all advanced out of the men's 400m hurdles prelims to Sunday's final. Myers took second in his heat with a PR of 50.94, which was the second-fastest time among the qualifiers. Brackins Jr. won his 400m hurdles heat with a time of 51.14 to automatically advance with the fourth-fastest time of the day. Mauricette finished third in the final heat and eighth overall with a time of 51.41 to advance to the final. His time was seventh-best among the qualifiers.
