The Women of Troy defeat the Golden Bears for the first time since 2016.
LOS ANGELES – The No. 7 ranked USC women's swimming and diving team downed No. 5 Cal 152-148 on Friday, Feb. 2 at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center. With the win, the Women of Troy remain unbeaten and improve to 7-0.
No. 17 Troy battled, but ultimately came up short against the No. 2 ranked Golden Bears, falling 193-106. With the loss USC drops to 2-3 on the season.
The Women of Troy opened the meet in dramatic fashion, capturing the 400y medley relay as Trojans Caroline Famous, Kaitlyn Dobler, Anicka Delgado and Vasilissa Buinaia combined to clock a 3:28.71 and take the event. Dobler flipped the lead as she'd blast an unofficial 57.50 100y breaststroke to put the Trojans out front heading into the butterfly leg. Delgado maintained the lead (52.02 unofficial), handing it off to Buinaia to bring it home for USC.
Freshman Krzysztof Chmielewski claimed the 1000y freestyle for the men, touching first in 8:53.72. Chmielewski touched nearly 18 seconds ahead of Cal's Jack Meehan who finished second in 9:11.02. The Polish native later returned to clock a 4:20.01 in the 500y freestyle, recording his second win of the day.
The Trojan 200y freestyle record-holder Minna Abraham continued her dominance in the event as she won the 200 in 1:43.84 for Troy. She'd later return to claim the 100y freestyle in 48.35, leading a 1-2 USC finish as Buinaia was closely behind in 48.95. Abraham also touched second in the 500y freestyle in 4:43.70.
Trojan breaststroker Dobler captured the 100y in 58.94, touching first ahead of the Golden Bears who'd finish 2-3-4. She also won the 200y breaststroke in 2:08.80 to contribute an additional nine points for the Women of Troy.
On the men's side, Troy finished 2-3 as Ben Dillard (54.00) and Chris O'Grady (54.14) would touch second and third, respectively. In the 200y breast, O'Grady touched first in 1:55.35, while Dillard was second in 1:55.82.
Senior Famous had a stellar day of swims, posting season PRs in both of her individual events. The backstroke specialist shocked the crowd at Uytengsu on Friday, claiming the splash and dash event in 22.32. She also clocked a season-best in the 100y backstroke, touching second in 50.83.
Trojan newcomer Sanberk Oktar had a massive swim to close out Friday afternoon for Troy, touching in 3:47.74 as he claimed the men's 400y IM. With the win, Oktar picked up an NCAA B-cut in the event.
The Trojans impressed in the diving well on Friday, as junior Shangfei Wang captured the men's 1-meter event with 253.40 points. Similarly, USC fifth-year Nike Agunbiade captured both the 1-meter (267.15) and 3-meter (299.90 points) events for the Women of Troy, contributing a valuable 18 points to the total meet score.
The women's meet was decided during the final event of the day as USC and Cal faced off in the 200y freestyle relay; Cal led by one point entering the race. The Women of Troy's A-relay would prevail as Buinaia, Delgado, Famous and Abraham combined to post a 1:27.68, out-touch the Golden Bears and win the meet by just four points.
USC is back in action tomorrow at 12 p.m. PT against No. 4/5 Stanford. Saturday marks 'Senior Day' for the Troy as 22 student-athletes will celebrate what may be their final home meet as Trojans.
