USC'S WOMEN'S PAC-12 SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES
USC won its first-ever Pac-12 title in 2016 with a program-record 1481 points as all 21 swimmers and six divers eligible to score that year did so. USC's previous best Pac-12 finish was second, something it did seven times, most recently in 2023. In 2013, USC finished second and it scored a program best 1418.5 points but lost by 21 to Stanford in the closest finish in conference history. While USC hadn't won a Pac-12 title before 2016, it did win four conference titles during the WCAA era, its last coming in 1985.
The Trojans are coming off a runner-up finish in 2023, scoring 1267.5 points. The Women of Troy picked up three individual titles as Kaitlyn Dobler and Nike Agunbiade further etched their names into the record books. Dobler claimed both the 100y breaststroke for the third consecutive year and captured her second 200y breaststroke title. Trojan Agunbiade continued to make history, this time becoming the first African American woman in Pac-12 history to capture two conference diving titles (3-meter in 2021 and platform in 2023).
The Women of Troy finished third-place finish in 2022, scoring 1373.5 points. USC picked up four Pac-12 individual titles during the 2022 championships, with fifth year senior Isabelle Odgers leading a 1-2-3 Trojan sweep in the 200y breaststroke (Kaitlyn Dobler second, Calypso Sheridan third). Dobler, who'd go on to win an NCAA title in the event, defended her freshman year Pac-12 title in the 100y breaststroke. Then sophomore Anicka Delgado tied for first in the 50y free, blasting a personal best 21.89 en route to her first conference crown. USC also saw freshman Caroline Pennington capture a title in the 1650y freestyle.
USC has won at least two Pac-12 individual titles (including diving) in 15 straight years and in 22 of the past 23 seasons and has won at least one title in 29 of the past 30 seasons.
Troy has seven conference relay titles, claiming the 800y free relay in 2003, 2010, 2016 and 2020 and taking the 400y medley relay in 2006 and 2009. In 2020, the Trojans also picked up the first ever conference relay title in the 400y free relay.
USC's 31 Pac-12 women's diving titles (12 on 1-meter, 13 on 3-meter, six on platform) are second most in conference history (behind only Stanford) and most have come under the direction of 25th-year diving head coach Hongping Li.
PAC-12 MEN'S DIVING NOTES
USC has captured 38 Pac-12 men's diving titles (13 on 1-meter, 10 on 3-meter, 15 on platform) in program history, most coming under the direction of Hongping Li. Last season, Li's divers swept the men's events as then-freshman Laurent Gosselin-Paradis won the 1-meter and platform events, while then-senior George Korovin captured the 3-meter competition. Gosselin-Paradis looks to defend his two titles this year and become the first Trojan to sweep the conference competition since Justin Dumais in 1999.
USC's Li was named the Pac-12 Men's Diving Coach of the Year, while freshman Gosselin-Paradis won the "Newcomer of the Year" award. Sophomore Shangfei Wang was tabbed the Men's Diver of the Year after a stellar performance at the NCAA Championships.
SO FAR THIS SEASON:
During their first appearance at home this season, the Trojans captured all six 'dual' wins at the USC Invitational, taking down Hawaii, UCSB and UCSD in the process. The Women of Troy swept all four relays, with Troy also winning three of four relays (400y medley relay, 200y medley relay and 400y free relay).
USC touched first in 11 individual events on both the men's and women's sides at the USC Invitational. Claiming 1-2-3-4 in a dominant 200y free performance was Claire Tuggle (1:45.50), Vasilissa Buinaia (1:46.07), Macky Hodges (1:47.81) and Hannah Kuechler (1:48.48). The Chmielewski twins led a 1-2 finish in the 500y free with Krzysztof (4:16.53) and Michael (4:27.36) touching first and second, respectively.
The USC women's squad opened the season with a victory on the road, capturing the SMU Classic Invitational women's team title. Troy finished third at the invite.
In Dallas, the Trojans swept the 'Swimmer of the Meet' awards, with Justina Kozan winning on the women's side, and Chris O'Grady claiming the men's high point title.
Kaitlyn Dobler captured the 100y breaststroke in a pool and meet record time of 57.35, lowering her previous meet record set last year (59.09). Dobler was the lone Trojan to earn NCAA automatic bids at the meet, meeting the standard in both the 100y (57.35) and 200y breaststroke (2:05.59).
In November, the Women of Troy opened Pac-12 competition with a pair of desert dual wins, downing No. 21 ASU and Arizona. Against No. 1 ASU and Arizona, Troy would come up short of a victory, falling to 0-2 to start the season.
At the mid-season championship invite, USC set a batch of school records and turned in some of the top times in the country. The Women of Troy opened the meet with a statement win, claiming the 200y medley relay in a school record time of 1:34.07 as Caroline Famous, Kaitlyn Dobler, Anicka Delgado and Vasilissa Buinaia combined to take the event. USC closed out the evening with another major swim in the 800y freestyle relay, as Claire Tuggle, Buinaia, Justina Kozan and Minna Abraham posted an NCAA leading time of 6:53.54 to earn an automatic cut and claim the victory. Thursday saw senior Ben Dillard (200y IM) and the Women of Troy's 400y medley A-relay each set school records during the second day of action at the Texas Hall of Fame Swimming Invitational. Dillard, whose previous season best was a 1:47.73, dropped over four seconds to clock a 1:43.24 en route to a fourth-place finish. The third day of action was highlighted by freshman Minna Abraham's 200y freestyle school record (1:41.38) and a women's 200y freestyle relay record (Buinaia, Delgado, Dobler and Abraham – 1:27.07). The final day of action included one of the biggest swims of the season for freshman Krzysztof Chmielewski, who dominated both the 1650y freestyle and the 200y fly. Chmielewski entered the meet with the country's top time in the mile at 14:41.62, but further solidified the top spot after firing a 14:37.74 in Austin to take the event and win by a margin of 22 seconds. That time would have been good enough for fifth place at last year's NCAA meet. The Trojan rookie would later return to blast a 1:41.61 and claim the 200y fly championship final.
After impressive performances during the month of November, Krzysztof Chmielewski and Minna Abraham each earned Pac-12 'Swimmer of the Month' honors.
USC men's and women's swimming opened spring action with wins over UNLV at home on January 6. The Women of Troy swept the Rebels as Trojan Anicka Delgado contributed a pair of individual event wins en route to a Pac-12 Women's Swimmer of the Week award.
The following weekend, the Women of Troy beat UC San Diego and Utah, while Troy handled business against the Tritons (UCSD). The same weekend, USC's diving squad claimed both team events and saw Laurent Gosselin-Paradiswin on 3-Meter, Shangfei Wang win on 1-Meter and Nike Agunbiade claim the women's 1-Meter competition.
After the successful weekend, swimmer Michal Chmielewski and diver Laurent Gosselin-Paradis earned Pac-12 weekly honors.
Next, the No. 7 ranked Women of Troy traveled north to defeat Pac-12 rival Washington State and improve to 6-0 in dual action.
The Women of Troy made history a few weeks later, defeating Cal and Stanford for the first time in the same season since 1996. On Friday, Feb. 2, USC downed No. 7 Cal, and followed it up Saturday, Feb. 3, with a historic win over No. 4 ranked Stanford. Both meets came down to the final relays, with freshman Minna Abraham turning in two anchor races for the ages to secure the team wins.
Troy fell to No. 2 Cal and No. 5 Stanford, dropping to 0-4 in conference duals.
Following a huge weekend of racing, Trojans Caroline Famous and Nike Agunbiade earned Pac-12 weekly honors, capturing the swimmer and diver of the week titles, respectively.
Most recently, the Women of Troy defeated crosstown rival UCLA on Feb. 9 to wrap up their regular season undefeated for the first time in program history (9-0).
After the historic ending to the regular season, senior Famous earned her second consecutive Pac-12 Swimmer of the Week award.
