USC’s Talia von Oelhoffen Selected To Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List For Nation’s Top Point Guard
October 28, 2024 | Women's Basketball
It’s the first such honor for the USC newcomer, who was an All-Pac-12 honoree while at Oregon State.
LOS ANGELES — As she enters her first season with the Women of Troy, USC women's basketball guard Talia von Oelhoffen has been named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List, putting her in the conversation as the nation's top point guard. Today (Oct. 28), the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, in partnership with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), announced the 20 watch-list candidates for the 2025 Nancy Lieberman Award.
Now in its 26th year, the Nancy Lieberman Award recognizes the top point guard in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. To be considered for this prestigious award, candidates must exhibit the floor leadership, playmaking, and ball-handling skills of Class of 1996 Hall-of-Famer Nancy Lieberman.
An All-Pac-12 Team selection at Oregon State, von Oelhoffen helped the Beavers reach the NCAA Elite Eight this past season. She completed her undergraduate degree as a Beaver, and is now a graduate student at USC, lined up as a key member of a highly anticipated Trojan roster for 2024-25.
A 5-11 guard who hails from Tri-Cities, Wash., von Oelhoffen dished out 5.0 assists per game last season while averaging 10.7 points per game for the Beavers. A driving force for OSU in its powerful 2023-24 campaign, von Oelhoffen added Pac-12 Defensive Honorable Mention to her All-Pac-12 Team honors. Also selected MVP of the Maui Classic, she started all 35 games for the 27-8 Beavers, averaging 27.1 minute per game and shooting 38.7 percent from the floor with 45 threes landed along the way.
Von Oelhoffen was the No. 14 rated player in the nation coming out of Chiawana High, where she was Washington 2B Player of the Year and a Jordan Brand Classic All-American. She earned 2021 Pac-12 All-Freshman Honorable Mention after joining the Beavers midway through the 2020-21 season, and she was an 2022 All-Pac-12 Team selection after leading OSU with 13.7 points per game that season. In her 2022-23 sophomore season, von Oelhoffen battled injury while averaging 13.2 points, 3.3 assists and 2.1 steals per game and earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention. She set her career high with a 41-point outing vs. Nevada that season as well.
She and the Women of Troy enter their 2024-25 campaign as the No. 3 team in the nation, set to open the season next week in Paris. No. 3 USC takes on No. 20 Ole Miss in an Aflac Oui-Play Game on November 4 at Adidas Arena in Paris, France.
Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting in each of the three rounds starting on Friday, November 1. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the Nancy Lieberman Award will be narrowed to 10, and then in late February, to just five. In March, the five finalists will be presented to the Lieberman and Hall of Fame's selection committees, where winners will be selected. The Selection Committee for the Nancy Lieberman Award is composed of top college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers.
The winner of the 2025 Lieberman Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the four other members of the Men's and Women's Starting Five.
