No. 1 USC Women’s Water Polo Takes Second Place At MPSF Tournament
April 30, 2023 | Women's Water Polo
Trojans fall to No. 2 Stanford 12-7 in today’s title match in San José.
SAN JOSÉ, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC women's water polo team was off the mark offensively in today's MPSF Championship game, scoring in single digits for the first time this year in a 12-7 loss to No. 2 Stanford. The Trojans go to 26-2 overall with the loss and looks ahead to the coming NCAA Selection show in USC's postseason path.
The Cardinal had the hotter hand in this one, taking a 5-1 lead in the first period as only Paige Hauschild was able to get to the back of the net for the Trojan cause in that stretch. USC carved the deficit down to three on three occasions in the second, with Tilly Kearns blasting a pair of goals —one on a 5-meter penalty shot and another on a hustle play on a 6-on-5 — while Hauschild pumped in her second to make it 7-4 at halftime.
USC pulled to within two in the third as Julia Janov and Mireia Guiral found back-to-back goals for USC on power play advantages. With the score at 8-6, Stanford pieced together a three-goal rally that spanned the third and fourth frames to put the Trojans in a five-goal hole. A fine finish from Bayley Weber got the margin to four, with USC down 11-7 with 5:21 to go, but the Trojans were unable to rein in the Cardinal. One more Stanford strike made it 12-7, and neither team broke through the rest of the way as the Cardinal emerged with the MPSF tourney title.
At the end of the tournament, USC had Paige Hauschild and Tilly Kearns named to the MPSF All-Tournament Team.

USC now awaits the announcement of the 2023 NCAA Tournament field, expecting an at-large berth when the field is released tomorrow (May 1) on NCAA.com at 5 p.m.
