April 01, 2023 | Women's Water Polo
Trojans silenced the Spartans in three periods of play to tack up another MPSF win.
LOS ANGELES — The No. 2 USC women's water polo team had its defense on display in drumming up a 14-3 win over visiting No. 20 San José State today at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. The Trojans kept the Spartans scoreless in the first half and in the fourth period while the offensive end featured a hat trick from Bayley Weber in the first period and another by Paige Hauschild in the second. USC improves to 21-1 overall with the win while going to 3-0 in MPSF play.
Jada Ward stepped into the cage for the second half, spelling Carolyne Stern, who had helped anchor the first-half shutout. Ward snuffed a series of Spartan 6-on-5 opportunities, although SJSU would break through on a 5-meter penalty shot. New Trojan scorers joined the sheet when Maggie Johnson found Fanni Muzsnay to follow a Spartan score and get USC ahead 11-2. Isabel Zimmerman set up Alex Bonaguidi next, and the freshman turned and struck out of set to make it 12-2 Trojans. A late lob made its way through for SJSU to close down the third with the score 12-3, prompting the Trojans to go on lockdown once again. While Ward racked up seven saves in the half, Muzsnay added her second goal and Johnson found another teammate as Zimmerman topped off the USC scoring with a 6-on-5 finish to make it a 14-3 USC final.
