Oregon State Overpowers USC In The Fourth To Win 56-48 In Pac-12 Tournament First Round

Trojans now await NCAA Tournament selections with their 21-9 overall record.
LOS ANGELES — The USC women's basketball team stumbled in the fourth quarter while Oregon State picked up its pace and pushed to a 56-48 victory over the Trojans in tonight's Pac-12 Tournament first round. The loss puts the No. 6 seeded USC at 21-9 overall, while No. 11 seed Oregon State goes to 13-17.
USC was up on the boards 21-18 and had the 3-point advantage in the first half but led it just 22-21 at halftime in a tight first 20 minutes. USC shot 28.6 percent from the floor in the first half, while Oregon State was at 29.6, although the Trojans had three 3-pointers to in the books to just one from the Beavers to help hold the lead at the break. In the second half, Oregon State generated a couple crucial scoring rallies, including an 11-0 surge in the fourth to erase a seven-point USC lead. Fifteen of the Beavers' 22 points in the fourth came from the free-throw line while the foul count tipped against the Trojans. By the final buzzer, OSU had shot 32 percent from the floor and went 19-of-21 from the free-throw line to outpace USC's final 29 percent shooting and 5-of-8 free-throw outing. The Beavers also wound up winning the battle of the boards 43-28.
USC was led in scoring by Kadi Sissoko's 16 points along with 12 from Destiny Littleton, while Rayah Marshall pulled down 11 rebounds. Oregon State received a game-high 18 points from Reagan Beers as well as 15 from Adlee Blacklock and 12 from Jelena Mitrovic.
It was a tight first frame, but USC's efforts on the boards early gave the Trojans a boost. Oregon State sneaked into the lead 7-6 at 4:25 before USC's Okako Adika nailed a 3-pointer and Destiny Littleton knocked down a pair of free throws to nudge the Trojans ahead 11-7 at 3:20. The Beavers got a couple buckets to got in the next stretch to carve into the lead, and USC was up 12-11 after 10 minutes of action. OSU snarled things up a 14-14 only to see Littleton and Taylor Bigby drill back-to-back 3-pointers for the Trojan cause to get a lift to a 20-14 at 7:35. A Kadi Sissoko jumper at 5:50 had USC up 22-15, although the Trojans would hit the skids on the scoring front from there. USC came up empty in the last 5:50 while the Beavers bit back again, and it was a slim 22-21 USC lead for halftime.
USC struck first in the third only to see a cold snap hit the Trojans while OSU make a 9-0 run to take the lead for the first time since the first frame. Down 30-26 with 4:30 on the clock, USC picked it up and got a steal and finish from Sissoko to get a spark. At 2:05, Littleton drained a three for a USC lead that would get clipped back by the Beavers, who edged ahead 34-33 entering the final two minutes of the third quarter. USC would get a couple hustle plays around some key defensive stops, with Littleton hitting Sissoko for a pair of fine finishes in the paint to tug the Trojans ahead 37-34 entering the fourth.
USC threes from Kayla Williams and Adika carried the Trojans to a 43-35 lead, but the Beavers built an 11-0 rally to take a 46-43 lead with 3:14 to go as the the foul count tipped heavily against the Trojans. Marshall fouled out with 1:53 on the clock, and OSU gripped a 48-45 lead entering the final minute. The Beavers struck down low to go up 50-45, but USC's Williams buried a three seconds later, making it a two-point margin with 27 seconds remaining. The rest of the game played out from the free-throw line, however, as the Beavers knocked down six straight free throws to round out a 56-48 win over the Trojans.
This was USC's third meeting with OSU this season, with the Trojans having won 69-58 in Corvallis and 60-56 in overtime in Los Angeles.
