No. 2 USC Women’s Water Polo Scores 16-7 Win At No. 5 Hawai'i
March 17, 2023 | Women's Water Polo
Trojans tally 10 goals in the second half to put the Rainbow Wahine out of reach.
HONOLULU, HAWAI'I — The No. 2 USC women's water polo team overcame a slow start before swamping No. 5 Hawai'i 16-7 in a road win tonight in Honolulu. The Trojans poured out 10 goals in the second half and gave up just a single goal in the fourth to anchor the road win and improve to 18-1 overall on the year.
It was a tight battle out of the gates as defense was the early name of the game. Tilly Kearns and Alejandra Aznar tallied the Trojans' first goals of the night before Hawai'i fired back, and it was a 2-1 margin after eight minutes of action. A Rainbow Wahine 5-meter penalty shot had things even at 2-2 early in the second, but USC answered with back-to-back goals to take back the lead. Later, Grace Tehaney delivered a crosscage rocket followed by a Kearns steal that led to a Maggie Johnson goal, and it was 6-3 USC for halftime.
Offense opened up on both ends in the third, but USC was still on a solid path. Mireia Guiral rattled in two goals in that frame while Julia Janov joined the scoresheet and Tehaney and Bayley Weber each tallied their second strikes of the night in carrying USC ahead 11-6 entering the fourth. USC would control both ends of the pool in those final eight minutes, tacking up five more goals from five different players while giving up just one to the Rainbow Wahine in wrapping up a final 16-7 victory.
NEXT:
USC has another battle ahead in Honolulu with a clash coming up against San Diego State at 12 p.m. PT on Sunday (March 19) at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
NOTABLE:
- With three goals, Bayley Weber moved up to rank No. 10 all-time in career scoring at USC with 190 career goals.
- Weber continues to lead the team in multiple-goal games, now with 14 this season.
- With three goals apiece Weber and Tilly Kearns lead the team with goals in 17 games this season.
- USC's win over Hawai'i was its 28th straight over the Rainbow Wahine and 50th in the all-time record between the programs since 1997.
