No. 2 USC Women’s Water Polo Powers Into BKI Semifinals With 16-4 Win Over ASU
February 24, 2023 | Women's Water Polo
Trojans will face the Bruins in tomorrow’s semifinals in Irvine.
IRVINE, CALIF. — The No. 2 USC women's water polo team drummed up another decisive win in taking down No. 7 Arizona State 16-4 tonight to wrap group play at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. The Trojans jumped out ahead of the Sun Devils with a powerful first frame and served up a now-trademark shutout of their opponent in the third period. USC now takes its 11-0 record into the BKI semifinals, where the Trojans will have their second clash against rival UCLA this season. The Trojans and Bruins square off at 5:15 p.m. tomorrow (Feb. 25) at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
USC's nighttime battle against Arizona State saw the Trojans outscore the Sun Devils 6-2 in the first period, with Fanni Muzsnay marking up back-to-back blasts in the final minute to build out a nice lead for USC. The Trojans poured out six more in the second, highlighted by two strikes from Alejandra Aznar while ASU managed just a long 5-meter penalty goal. USC gripped a 12-3 lead at the break, and then silenced the Sun Devils in the third to go with two more Trojan goals for a 14-3 lead to go into the fourth. That's where Téa Poljak and Julia Janov would join the scoresheet, making it nine USC scorers in the win. Goalies Carolyne Stern and Jada Ward split time in the cage, combining for seven saves and just those four goals by the Sun Devils.
