SERIES VS. MARIST: This is the first meeting between USC and Marist in baseball.
LAST SEASON: The Trojans are coming off a 25-28 campaign in 2022, finishing 8-22 in conference play.
A NEW ERA: USC baseball embarks on a new era as the program heads into its first season under Head Coach Andy Stankiewicz. Stankiewicz was hired this past July after he spent the last 11 years at Grand Canyon. He brings with him a record of 341-239-2 as a skipper and has compiled a staff that has been to a combined 15 College World Series as either a player or coach. Travis Jewett is USC's hitting coach, Trojan great Seth Etherton is the USC pitching coach, Andy Jenkins is the volunteer assistant and Sergio Brown is the Director of Player Development for the Trojans.
WBC TROJANS: USC has four alums playing in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, which is tied with Long Beach State and NC State for the most among all NCAA schools. Lars Nootbaar will compete for Japan, Garrett Stubbs and Robert Stock will play for Israel, and Daniel Cooper is on the Great Britain roster.
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE: The Trojans have six teams on the 2023 slate that made the NCAA Tournament last season and two that made the College World Series. Five Pac-12 teams made the postseason last year (Arizona, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford and UCLA), with both Stanford and Oregon State hosting regionals. Auburn also made the tournament last year, advancing all the way to the College World Series along with Stanford.
PAC-12 TOURNAMENT: The Pac-12 Baseball Tournament is scheduled for May 23-27 at Scottsdale Stadium (Arizona). After last season's inaugural conference tournament, the field will be increased to nine teams and the format will change to pool play instead of double elimination. Pool play will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with three games per day. Each pool will play a round-robin. The three pool winners will advance to the Friday single-elimination semifinals along with one Wild Card team. The Wild Card will be determined by the best record of the non-advancing teams. Any tiebreaker will be awarded to the highest seeded team.
USC TO THE MLB: No other school can claim a larger number of alumni who have made it to the big leagues, with 118 Trojans having played in the MLB. The list includes three Trojans who have made it to the MLB Hall of Fame (Randy Johnson, Tom Seaver, Pat Gillick), nine Cy Young Awards (Johnson 5 times, Seaver 3 times, Barry Zito once), three Rookie of the Years (Seaver, Fred Lynn, Mark McGwire), one American League MVP (Lynn), one World Series MVP (Johnson), 29 World Series appearances and 67 All-Star Game appearances. In all, 348 Trojans have been selected in the MLB Draft.
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY: The Trojans have an unparalleled history of championship success at the College World Series, winning 12 total national titles (1948, 1958, 1961, 1963, 1968, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1978, 1998). The 12 titles are double any other team in the country and were won in 21 CWS appearances by the Trojans. USC won five straight NCAA Championships from 1970-74, a feat no other program has accomplished.
