USC Swimming and Diving Opens Season at SMU Classic

16 Trojans will represent the Cardinal and Gold at the two-day invite.
LOS ANGELES - The USC men's and women's swimming and diving teams are headed to Texas this weekend to compete in the two-day, season-opening SMU Classic Invitational at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center. The meet begins at 4 p.m. PT on Friday, October 6, and runs through Saturday, October 7.
The Women of Troy will face competition from Auburn, Louisville, Miami, Missouri and host SMU during the invite, while the Troy will compete against swimmers from Auburn, Louisville, Missouri, Texas and SMU.
Both squads will travel just eight swimmers and one diver to represent the Cardinal and Gold at the meet.
Of the seven USC women's swimmers selected to represent the Trojans in Dallas, four are newcomers. Freshmen Lilla Minna Abraham, Vasilissa Buinaia and Macky Hodges will make their debuts alongside sophomore Virginia transfer Claire Tuggle. Katherine Adams, Anicka Delgado, Kaitlyn Dobler and Justina Kozan are the veterans making the trip. Junior Grace Lee will represent USC in the diving portion of the meet.
This year will mark Troy's first trip to the SMU Classic, with three USC newcomers set to make their Trojan debuts this weekend. The Polish pair of Krzysztof and Michal Chmielewski as well as Ian Pickles will compete for Troy alongside returners Ben Dillard, Harry Homans, Vaggelis Makrygiannis, Chris O'Grady and Artem Selin. Sophomore Laurent Gosselin-Paradis will represent USC in the dive well.
At the 2022 SMU Invite, the Women of Troy captured a team championship and won four events to outscore their opponents. Then-juniors Delgado and Dobler combined to help win the 200y medley relay, while also helping USC to a second-place finish in the 200y freestyle relay. Dobler also set a pool and meet record in the 100y breaststroke in 59.09.

2022-23 SEASON RECAP:
In 2023, Maurer led the Women of Troy to a 12th place finish at NCAA's and a runner-up finish at the Pac-12 Championships. Troy finished 22nd at NCAAs and was fifth at the Pac-12 Championships. Under Maurer, Senior Kaitlyn Dobler earned first team All-America honors in both the 100y and 200y breaststroke, while fifth year Isabelle Odgers earned first team honors in the 200y breast. At the Pac-12 Championships, Dobler won two conference crowns, claiming both breaststroke events. Both of her squads earned CSCAA Fall & Spring Scholar All-America team honors with 19 swimmers being named to the conferences Pac-12 Winter Academic Honor Roll.
During the 2023 season, Trojan diving head coach Hongping Li led USC to a Pac-12 Team Diving Title, with his Trojans sweeping the men's competition and capturing the women's platform event. He coached his squad to five top-8 finishes at the NCAA Championships including a runner-up finishes by Shangfei Wang on both springboards. Wang was named the Pac-12 Men's Diver of the Year, while freshman Laurent Gosselin-Paradis earned the title of Newcomer of the Year after winning two conference crowns. Senior George Korovin won the 3-meter event at Pac-12's, while Nike Agunbiade won the platform competition.
RETURNING TALENT:
USC returns a handful of star talent including 2022 NCAA 100y breaststroke Kaitlyn Dobler, 2023 NCAA springboard runner-up diver Shangfei Wang and two-time Pac-12 Diving Champions Nike Agunbiade and Laurent Gosselin-Paradis. The All-Americans and veteran Trojans look to lead USC in the pool again this season.
Additionally, NCAA qualifying returners include Anicka Delgado, Hanna Henderson Hannah Kuechler, Justina Kozan, Caroline Famous, Maddie Huitt for the Women of Troy.
On the men's side, Chris O'Grady (All-American honorable mention), Artem Selin, Ben Dillard and Harry Homans look to be major contributors for Troy this season.
FRESH FACES:
USC welcomes 17 new swimmers (12 freshmen) and two divers to the team this season (1 freshman).
Sophomore distance freestyle specialist Claire Tuggle, a transfer from Virginia, is coming off a fourth-place finish in the 500y free and seventh-place finish in the 1650y free at the ACC Championships. USC also adds Michigan transfer Sophia Kudryashova to their roster this season, with Kudryashova specializing in both the 100y and 200y freestyle. Rounding out the field is sprint freestyle specialist Vasilissa Buinaia, who looks to contribute a plethora of high-level competition experience as a member of the Russian National Team.
USC welcomes three accomplished freshman swimmers in Macky Hodges, Lindsay Barnes and Lilla Minna Abraham.
On the men's side, freshmen Ian Pickles, the 2023 Arizona D1 State Champion in the 100y free and 2023 World's Silver medalist Krzysztof Chmielewski headline Troy's batch of new talent. Both have twin brothers on the squad with similar swim experience, as Trojan rookies Evan Pickles and Michal Chmielewski also look to contribute this season. Other incoming talent includes four-time NISCA all-American Keller Morgan, GHSA 6A State Champion Adam O'Brien, two-time Speedo Sectionals Champion Salvador Goya and three-time WMPSSDL Champion Jack Moloney.
Sophomore Derek Zhang joins the Trojans following one season at Pittsburgh, where he was an ACC finalist and member of the All-ACC Academic team. USC also added a pair of fifth years in Jack Hamilton and Mark McCrary. Hamilton and McCrary were both repeat Ivy Championship qualifiers while competing for Penn.
Hongping Li's small but mighty diving squad added a pair of fresh faces this season in freshman Lily Castanon (2022 Winter Nationals Qualifier) and Pittsburgh graduate transfer Wesley Ahart (repeat ACC Championship scorer).
