USC Women’s Swimming and Diving Wins Team Title at SMU Classic

Trojans sweep ‘Swimmer of the Meet’ Awards.
LOS ANGELES - The USC women's swimming and diving squad claimed the team title at the SMU Classic Invitational for the second consecutive year to open the 2023-24 season at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center in Dallas, Texas.
USC's Justina Kozan (53 points) and Chris O'Grady (51 points) were named the women's and men's 'Swimmers of the Meet,' respectively, tallying more points than all other competing swimmers.
The Women of Troy kicked off the second day of action with a quartet win in the 200y medley relay as Justina Kozan, Kaitlyn Dobler, Anicka Delgado and Vasilissa Buinaia touched in 1:37.02.
Sophomore UVA transfer Claire Tuggle recorded her first event win as a Trojan, winning the 500y freestyle in 4:42.81. Tuggle out touched her opponents by more than five seconds.
Senior Dobler completed the sweep of the breaststroke events, claiming the 200y breast in 2:08.59.
The Polish powerhouse Krzsyztof Chmielewski picked up a pair of individual event wins on Saturday, claiming both the 500y freestyle and 200y fly. Chmielewski kicked off the morning session with the 500y freestyle win, touching in 4:15.18 before the endurance specialist would dominate the 200y fly. He touched in 1:41.60 to record the second fastest time in school history and finish just .54 off of the school record held by Alexei Sancov.
Freshman Minna Abraham continued her winning ways with an individual victory in the 200y I.M., touching first in 1:57.51 to claim her second event of the weekend.
USC's Artem Selin emerged victorious in the 100y freestyle, blasting a 43.04.
In the 200y breaststroke, Chris O'Grady touched second in the A final in 1:56.29 while teammate Ben Dillard won the B final in 1:57.36.
USC's diving contingent contributed a handful of additional points as Laurent Gosselin-Paradis was second on 3-meter (339.80). Grace Lee was fifth on 1-meter with 258.65 points.

Day one of the SMU Classic was highlighted by two pool records and a handful of big USC debuts.
The evening opened with the Women of Troy claiming the 400y medley relay in 3:30.90 as Macky Hodges, Kaitlyn Dobler, Anicka Delgado and Vasilissa Buinaia teamed up to take the event.
Sophomore Justina Kozan kept the Trojans momentum going as she picked up an individual win in the 400y IM (4:07.60). Sophomore Claire Tuggle won the b final in 4:12.12.
Freshman Minna Abraham impressed during her Trojan debut, winning the 200y freestyle in 1:43.53, the fastest time in the country this season. Her time is the fastest in the country so far this season amongst all college swimmers.
Senior Kaitlyn Dobler captured the women's 100y breaststroke in a pool and meet record time of 57.35, lowering her previous meet record set last year (59.09).
Chris O'Grady finished second in the 100y breaststroke, clocking a. 52.97. He was also third in the 400y IM, posting a 3:47.73.
Trojan rookie Krzysztof Chmielewski picked up a win for Troy in the 100y fly, clocking a 46.56.
The Women of Troy closed out the first evening of action in Dallas with a victory in the 800y freestyle relay as Kozan, Macky Hodges, Minna Abraham and Claire Tuggle teamed up to record a 7:02.06. Their time lowered the previous pool record of 7:03.79 set by Louisville in 2018.
In the diving well, Laurent Gosselin-Paradis finished as the runner-up in the 1-meter competition, tallying 351.20 points to finish second. Grace Lee was third on women's 3-meter with 283.15 points.

USC returns home for their first and only home swim meet of the fall next weekend as they host the two-day three-session USC Invitational. The Uytengsu Aquatics Center will welcome UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego and Hawaii with action set to begin Friday, October 13 at 1 p.m.
