USC Men's Golf Opens Spring Season At Southwestern Invitatational

The USC men's golf team, with a pair of medalist honors to its credit in the fall, returns to action and kickstarts the 2023 spring season at Southwestern Invitational, Monday through Wednesday (Jan. 30-Feb. 1), at the North Ranch C.C. in Westlake Village, Calif.
The Trojans, in their third year under Head Coach J.T. Higgins and assistant coach Matt Walton, opened the 2022-23 season with a second at the Husky Invitational while sophomore Jackson Rivera took first, complemented by senior Jack Boulger's win at the adjacent Husky Individual Invitational.
Southwestern Invitational Information
The annual 12-team tournament hosted by Pepperdine, in its 43rd edition, will use parts of both the Lakes and Oaks courses at North Ranch, combining for a par 72, 7,017-yard venue.
USC's starting lineup will feature senior Jack Boulger, juniors Krando Nishiba and Shane Ffrench (in his debut this season), sophomore Jackson Rivera and freshman Mahanth Chirravuri. Sophomore Gavin Aurilia will be playing as an individual.
The 2023 field includes host Pepperdine, USC, Arizona State, Georgia, Oregon, San Diego State, San Jose State, Texas, UCLA, UNLV, Wake Forest and Washington.
Golf Channel will air live coverage each day beginning at 1:30 p.m. PT. Tee times off of 1 begin at 8 a.m. each day. Results will available at Golfstat.com.
The Trojans formerly hosted the event as both the USC Collegiate Invitational and the North Ranch Intercollegiate. They have won the tournament seven times (second most in event history), most recently a one-stroke victory in 2019 over California at 4-under 860 (284-285-291). Former All-American Justin Suh won the individual crown at 12-under 204 (68-68-68) — tied for the most under par in tournament history — that year and clinched the team win with a birdie on the final hole. Prior to that, USC last won the event in 2016 at 26-under 838, setting the tournament record for most under par. Andrew Levitt was the individual winner (with an 8-under 208) in 2016, one of six Trojans with Suh who have won the tournament title. Other winners include Yi Keun Chang (2013), Tim Sluiter (2008), Rory Hie (2007) and Sam Randolph (1984).
USC finished ninth most recently in 2022. In 2020, Troy tied for second and Leon D'Souza tied for second at 11-under, tied for the third best score in the event's history. In 2009, USC's T.J. Vogel set the record for low score with a second-round 63.
SEASON-OPENING SUCCESS
Sophomore Jackson Rivera won the Husky Invitational by four strokes while senior Jack Boulger won the Husky Individual Invitational by six — both the first titles of their collegiate careers — while the USC men's team finished second at the Gold Mountain G.C. in Bremerton, Wash., to kick off the 2022-23 season. USC combined for a three-round 7-over 871 (293-281-297), finishing three strokes back of first-place Washington State and two ahead of third-place and host Washington.
Rivera never wavered during the final round and maintained at least a two-stroke lead throughout Tuesday and finished at 8-under 208 (67-70-71), closing with a birdie on 18. Rivera, who posted a pair of sixth-place finishes and a 10th as a freshman, has four top 10s in his past five starts. Boulger won going away on Gold Mountain's Cascade Course at 12-under 201 (68-67-66), posting his best three rounds in Cardinal and Gold.
Freshman Mahanth Chirravuri led USC at the Inverness Intercollegiate with a tie for 20th at 6-over. Chirravuri and Rivera topped USC at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational at 6-over, tied for 47th.
Chirravuri led USC at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate with a tie for 20th at 2-under 214, the second time he's been USC's top finisher while also co-leading once with Rivera.
Sophomore Gavin Aurilia topped USC's efforts in the fall finale at the Cal Poly Invitational, tying for 23rd at 1-over 217 as USC tied for eighth overall.
Boulger has a team-best six rounds of par or better while Rivera has five. All of Boulger's are also under par, four for Rivera.
Boulger leads the team with a stroke average of 72.25 (and four rounds in the 60s) with Chirravuri second at 72.53.
Chirravuri leads the team with 14 counting rounds in 15 outings while Rivera and Gavin Aurilia have 13 each.

The Trojans return six golfers from last year's squad, led by Rivera, who was All-West Region as well as All-Pac-12 second team during a freshman season that saw him start all 12 tournaments, leading the team in stroke average (71.70), rounds in the 60s (nine), rounds under par (20) and rounds of par or better (23).
He posted a team-best three top 10 finishes, six top 18s and seven top 21s and was USC's top finisher in eight of 11 events. Two of his top 10 results came in the postseason. He tied for sixth at the Pac-12 Championships at par 284 (73-68-74-69) and followed that with a tie for 10th at the NCAA Stockton Regional at 7-under 209 (68-71-70).
Also back are graduate senior Jack Boulger, senior Parker Sisk, juniors Krando Nishiba and Shane Ffrench and sophomore Gavin Aurilia. The Trojans welcome a pair of freshmen in Mahanth Chirravuri from Arizona and Rocky Chapman from the U.K.
Aurilia started nine times last year, Ffrench eight times, Nishiba seven times, Boulger six times and Sisk twice.
Chirravuri was a 2020 Rolex/AJGA All-American honorable mention selection and won the Arizona state title in 2020 at 10-under while helping his school to state team titles in 2019, 2020 and 2021, finishing third individually in 2021. Chapman is a talented up-and-coming golfer from England who will compete for starting time.
