Onishi 68 Again Leads USC In The Goodwin First Round
March 25, 2021 | Men's Golf
Trojans 11th in 28-team field.
Senior Kaito Onishi continued his strong play with a first-round 2-under 68 while freshman Shane Ffrench turned in a par round to lead the USC men's golf team during the first round of The Goodwin on Thursday (Sept. 25) at the Stanford G.C.
The Trojans combined for a 7-over 287 and are in 11th, 12 back in the 28-team field. Host Stanford leads the field at 5-under with Arizona State second (-2) and Denver and San Diego tied for third (-1).
"I thought we were pretty good today and it was close to a strong round," USC Coach J.T. Higgins said. "We had three guys play pretty solidly and we need to get the counting score down a little lower. I was impressed with Kaito and Shane, who did a great job, and Cam is rounding back into form after an issue with his back. Now we've got to get the other two going tomorrow."
Onishi, who has led USC in its last two events including a tie for ninth last time out at 10-under 206, maintained his strong play and is tied for eighth, five off the lead. He was 1-under going out with a birdie on 3 and got to 3-under with birdies on 16 and 17 before finishing with a bogey.
Still, it's his fourth straight round under par and his third 68 in a row.
Ffrench maintained his team lead in rounds of par or better with his eighth this season and is tied for 20th at 70. He was 1-over going out and used birdies on 11 and 14 on the back to even his round.
Junior Cameron Henry is tied for 63rd after his 3-over 73 that saw three birdies on the day and an even back nine.
Freshman Danny Tiscareno, recently added to the USC roster, made his collegiate debut today with a counting 6-over 76. It included his first birdie as a Trojan on 5 as he went 3-over on both nines today. He is tied for 100th.
Freshman Krando Nishiba, in his second straight start, finished tied for 131st at 9-over 79.
USC will tee off first thing in the morning, starting at 7 a.m. PT with Georgia Tech, San Diego and TCU.
