June 23, 2020 | Women's Volleyball, Features
Theriot was the starting libero at Marist in 2019 and was chosen to the MAAC All-Rookie Team
LOS ANGELES – The USC women's volleyball team will add transfer libero Sophia Theriot (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) from Marist College to its 2020 roster, first-year head coach Brad Keller announced on Tuesday, June 23.
"Sophia is a talented and proven defender," said Keller. "As a staff, we have looked for ways to bolster our defense and solidify our serve-and-pass game; and we expect Sophia to be an important part of that process. We are excited to welcome her to our team and program; and into the Trojan Family."
Theriot was selected to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Rookie Team and was a four-time choice for the MAAC Libero of the Week award as a freshman in 2019. She ranked third in the MAAC for digs (4.78 dps) and her single-season total of 468 digs ranked fifth in the Marist record books. Theriot played in 27 matches and posted a career high of 38 digs against Canisius on Oct. 12, which was also the second-highest single-match total in school history. In all, she had 20 matches in double-digit digs with 11 contests over the 20-dig mark. Theriot also served 21 aces and had 94 assists in her first collegiate season.
Theriot was a three-year letterwinner at La Costa Canyon High School under head coach Rachel Morris; the same high school that produced USC All-Americans Katie Fuller (2009-12), Natalie Hagglund (2010-13), and Brittany Abercrombie (2014-17). She helped her school to the CIF Open Division final and was a three-time San Diego Union-Tribune All-Academic Team and three-time CIF Scholar-Athlete selection. Theriot played four years with Coast Volleyball Club.
Last season, USC faced one of the nation's toughest schedules and finished the with an 18-14 overall record despite myriad injuries and changes to the Trojans' lineup. The Women of Troy went 11-9 in the Pac-12 and landed in sixth place. USC received an at-large berth into the NCAA tournament and made its 37th all-time appearance in the tourney (29th consecutive) where the Trojans advanced to the second round before falling to top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Baylor. Outside hitter Khalia Lanier was honored as an AVCA second-team All-American.
