Shortened But Successful Season For Women Of Troy
April 01, 2020 | Women's Basketball, Features
The COVID-19 pandemic put a stop to the postseason, but USC still has plenty to be proud of in 2019-20.
USC women's basketball put together an impressive effort in 2019-20 and was poised for a trip to the WNIT before the coronavirus pandemic brought an end to all competition in March 2020. To that point, the Women of Troy had plenty to be proud of, as Mark Trakh's young group made a significant splash in the competitive Pac-12 and saw several Trojans shine bright en route to USC's 17-14 overall record in 2019-20.
In recognition of Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Alissa Pili's breakout first season as a Trojan, ESPN listed the Alaska product as the No. 3 freshman in the nation. That tops off a laundry list of accolades that Pili picked up along the way, as she also snagged a spot on the All-Pac-12 Team and Pac-12 All-Freshman Team after standing tall as a four-time Pac-12 Freshman of the Week. Pili was joined by fellow freshman Endyia Rogers, who also nabbed a Pac-12 Freshman of the Week award, on the Pac-12 honor roll, with Rogers securing a spot on the Pac-12 All-Freshman Honorable Mention list. Senior Kayla Overbeck, meanwhile, earned her first Pac-12 honors with her place on the Pac-12 All-Defensive Honorable Mention list.
In the final national rankings, USC finished out as the No. 7 team in the nation with its 78.6 percent free throw output — which also set the USC program record. Individually, there were a whopping five Women of Troy standing tall in the national rankings, as Pili, Rogers, Desiree Caldwell, Angel Jackson and Aliyah Jeune each registered stats that held them top-240 in the nation or better. Pili stood tallest with top-100 efforts in five different categories.
As a team, USC's season was highlighted by big upset wins over top-15 opponents. The one that resonated deepest was a double-overtime win over crosstown rival UCLA, although the upset of Oregon State was another key example of the talent and potential in this young Trojan team. In spite of injuries to key contributors, USC persevered and finished out its third straight winning season under head coach Mark Trakh.
