Fusaro Wins Pac-12 Swim/Dive Scholar Athlete of the Year As Championships Close

Trojans finish sixth overall.
Senior diver Henry Fusaro was named the Pac-12 Swim/Dive Scholar Athlete of the Year to highlight USC's final evening at the 2020 Pac-12 Men's Swimming Championships in Federal Way, Wash.
Fusaro, the Trojan diving team captain, recorded three wins against USC's Bay Area rivals, giving him seven this season in dual-meet action, including three Pac-12 sweeps (against ASU, Arizona and Stanford) on springboard. This season, he has also posted wins on the 1- and 3-meter boards at both the Trojan and Utah Diving Invitationals and was second on both boards at the Bruin Invite. To date, the senior has 22 dual-meet and invitational titles.
Most recently, Fusaro finished third on men's 3-meter with 404.30 at the 2020 Pac-12 Men's Diving Championships. Fusaro is double majoring in Philosophy, Politics and Law and Law, History and Culture, all while boasting an impressive 3.71 G.P.A. He is also a two-time College Swimming and Diving Coaches Associate (CSCAA) Scholar-All-American and a Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team Honoree (2018.)
The award, which is presented in each of the 24 sports the Pac-12 sponsors, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes who are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline. Two other Trojans have won the award; Pawel Furtek in 2018 and Alex Lendrum in 2013.
USC finished the meet sixth with 318.5 points. California won the team title with 856 points. Arizona (578) was second and followed by Stanford (573.5), Arizona State (567), Utah (384) and USC.
David Mertz finished 11th overall in the 1650y free in a PR 15:10.75. Victor Johansson was 16th in 15:22.47.
In the 100y free, junior Nikola Miljenic led the Trojans, finishing first in the consolation final in 43.09. Max Saunders was sixth in the heat posting a 43.56.
Senior Matthew McDermott reached his second career conference consolation heat, posting a PR 1:57.75 in prelims and a 1:58.42 in finals to finish 14th overall in the 200y breast. Sean Ward touched eighth in the consolation heat of the event in 2:00.38.
Sophomore Alexei Sancov threw down a huge swim to win the B final of the 200y fly in 1:43.32. Mark Jurek finished eighth in the consolation final in 1:47.12.
In the final race of the championships, USC suffered a disqualification in the 400y free relay.
