Pitching Again Powers Trojans as USC Beats Defending Champs Vanderbilt 2-1
March 07, 2020 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – A night after taking down No. 22 TCU 2-1, John Beller led the USC baseball team to another 2-1 victory, throwing eight spectacular innings to beat the defending national champion and second-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores on Saturday afternoon at Dedeaux Field.
Beller allowed a leadoff home run on the first pitch of the game and then gave up just one hit the rest of the way as USC moved to 9-4 with the victory. Vanderbilt falls to 11-5 with the loss.
After the leadoff homer, the lone hit allowed by Beller was a bloop single in the fifth inning. The junior lefty worked into the ninth, but exited after an error allowed the leadoff man to reach for Vanderbilt. Trojan closer Ben Wanger came in and got the final three outs, stranding the Commodore runner on third with a strikeout to end the game. It was Wanger's second save in as many days and his third of the year.
USC tied the game up in the third inning, when Tyresse Turner led the inning off with a single and then scored on a double by Ben Ramirez. The Trojans took the lead in the lead in the seventh, loading the bases and then getting a single from Clay Owens that ricocheted off the pitcher's leg and scored the go-ahead run.
USC outhit Vanderbilt 8-2 in the game and the Trojan pitching staff allowed just two walks, to five given up by the visitors. Jake Eder took the loss for the Commodores, throwing 6.0 innings and giving up seven hits and two runs. Tyler Brown tossed the final two innings for Vanderbilt.
