No. 4 USC Tops No. 6 UC Irvine And No. 2 UCLA To Earn Return to Barbara Kalbus Invite Final
February 22, 2020 | Women's Water Polo, Features
Trojans will take on Stanford tomorrow in a battle for back-to-back BKI titles for the Trojans.
IRVINE, CALIF. — The No. 4 USC women's water polo team churned out two strong wins on day two of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, following up a 10-7 win over No. 6 host UC Irvine with a 9-7 win over No. 2 UCLA in the semifinals. In beating the Bruins, USC avenged an earlier loss to UCLA and punched a ticket to tomorrow's tournament championship game. There, the 10-1 Trojans will look to defend their title from last year in a rematch with No. 1 Stanford at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 23) in Irvine, Calif.
Kelsey McIntosh led the scoring charge with three goals in each game, while goalie Holly Parker followed up a nine-save outing vs. the Anteaters but tying her career high with 10 saves to beat the Bruins. With her six goals today, senior captain McIntosh broke the 100-goal barrier, now with 102 goals to her name as a Trojan.
To start the winning day, USC turned a tight first frame into a largely Trojan-controlled contest thanks to a 4-0 scoring surge. Holly Parker shut down an Anteater 5-meter penalty try in the first, and Bayley Weber beat the buzzer to close the first period with USC up 3-2 on its host. In the second, USC poured out three unanswered goals as Parker collected a couple more saves and had a steal to help further anchor the USC defense en route to a 6-2 Trojan advantage by halftime. UCI came out firing next and plugged in two quick goals before Weber found Mireia Guiral for a blast that righted the ship for USC and made it 7-4 to bring up the fourth. There, the teams stayed in stride, with Kelsey McIntosh getting to a hat trick and Denise Mammolito tallying her second of the day to keep USC out ahead for a final 10-7 Trojan victory that pushed USC on through to the evening semifinals.
The Trojans took control of things early against rival UCLA. After the Bruins had it even early at 1-1, the Trojans punched up four straight scores. Denise Mammolito lit the fuse, and McIntosh converted a 5-meter penalty shot earned by Bayley Weber next to make it 3-1. Kelsey ripped in her second of the frame with a skipper, and USC was up 4-1 to close the first, but far from done doing damage to the Bruins. Verica Bakoc opened the second with a 6-on-5 score, putting the Bruins back by four, down 5-1. UCLA would get a 5-meter penalty shot to go next, only to see Grace Tehaney lace her her second to net a 6-2 USC advantage by halftime.
The Bruins would manage just one goal in the third while Elise Stein and McIntosh answered with strikes before Tehaney blasted a buzzer-beater to carry the Trojans to a 9-3 lead entering the fourth. UCLA would find a scoring touch in that frame, but had too much ground to make up on the Trojans, who held tight to their hard-fought victory ad capped it with one last block from Parker to make it a 9-7 USC win.
