Trojans Open Season With 16-2 Win Over Western Michigan

The Trojans posted their 16 runs on 15 hits, all while holding the Broncos to only three base knocks on the day. The win was the first under new head coach Jason Gill.
Clay Owens and Brady Shockey helped USC jump out to an early lead, each driving in a run in the bottom of the first, and then the Trojans broke things open with a six-run third inning. The Trojans got RBI from six different players in the inning, scoring their six runs on five hits and three walks.
A couple of long balls later in the evening really put things out of reach as Preston Hartsell hit a two-run shot in the sixth to make it a 10-1 game, and Johnny Olmstead blasted a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth to make it 15-2. A sacrifice fly by Connor Cirillo later in the eighth capped the scoring.
On the mound, Kyle Hurt got the start and struck out six batters in 3.0 innings of work. John Beller then came in and threw 5.0 strong innings, giving up two hits and a run to pick up the win. Freshman Ethan Hoopingarner tossed the final frame, striking out two to retire the side in order.
The Trojans had 22 players appear in tonight's game, with 11 different players recording hits and nine driving in runs.

- John Beller moved to 1-0 with 5.0 innings pitched giving up two hits and one run, while striking out six and walking one.
- Brady Shockey went 3-for-4 at the plate, with a double, one RBI and one run scored.
- Clay Owens was 2-for-2, with a walk, two RBI and a run scored.
- Preston Hartsell went 2-for-3 on the day, hitting his first career homer and driving in three runs.
- Johnny Olmstead, playing in his first collegiate game, hit a grand slam in his lone at bat.
