USC Women Roar Back To Beat Washington In OT
January 26, 2020 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans overcame a 14-point deficit thanks in large part to freshman Endyia Rogers’ 29-point game.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team held its ground again on home turf, trailing by as much as 14 points before turning the tide, forcing overtime and finishing out an 81-78 win over visiting Washington at Galen Center. USC freshman Endyia Rogers scored 24 points in the last 25 minutes of the game, icing two free throws with eight seconds left in overtime to help lock in a dramatic USC victory. The win is USC's third in a row, improving the Trojans to 11-8 overall and to 3-5 in Pac-12 play. Washington goes to 10-9, 2-6.
Washington drained six 3-pointers in the second quarter to turn a five-point game into a 37-25 Husky lead by halftime. USC had hit just two shots in the first quarter before getting its touch back in the second, but the Trojans couldn't keep early pace with Washington's 44-percent 3-point effort. USC was a 25 percent from 3-point range by halftime. Overall, USC shot 34.4 percent from the floor to Washington's 37.5 percent, and the Huskies were up on the boards 26-18 in the first 20 minutes of action. USC improved down the line in the next stretch, outrebounding the Huskies 22-16 and outscoring them 56-41 in the next 25 minutes. By the time the buzzer sounded on the Trojans' overtime victory, USC had heated up to 43.3 percent from the floor to outpace Washington's final 37.3 percent.
USC's Endyia Rogers went big with a new career-high 29 points and nine assists, tallying the most points by a Trojan this season. Rogers also was 10-of-11 from the free-throw line. Fellow freshman Alissa Pili recorded her third consecutive double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds, and senior captain Desiree Caldwell finished with 10 points. Washington received a team-high 17 points from Amber Melgoza along with 16-point outings from Mai-Loni Henson and Haley Van Dyke, who combined for seven of Washington's 11 threes in the game.
Washington jumped out to a 9-0 lead while the Trojans opened up on a cold streak for the first six-plus minutes, going 0-for-8 from the floor until Desiree Caldwell took it to the hoop to get USC on the board at 3:05. A 7-0 Washington rally opened the second quarter before Kayla Overbeck broke that up with a layup. The Huskies were up 19-6 on a 3-pointer soon after, prompting Endyia Rogers to land a much-needed three of her own at 6:35. That seemed to warm things up for the Trojans, who had Aliyah Jeune and Alyson Miura nail back-to-back threes before Overbeck connected in the paint, and USC had the deficit down to 22-17 with 4:40 on the clock. Turned out, the Huskies also found their hot hands and dropped three more 3-pointers to total six made in the second quarter to build out a 37-23 lead. Alissa Pili had the final word for the Trojans, and Washington gripped a 37-25 lead at halftime.
Down by 12 midway through the third, USC fired off a 14-0 run sparked by Caldwell and capped by Pili to get USC its first lead of the game, up 47-45 with 2:00 on the clock. Washington would hits its ninth 3-pointer soon after, though, and the Huskies edged ahead 48-47 entering the fourth. Angel Jackson would convert a three-point play to tie it up 50-50 at 7:55, and a 3-pointer from Miura would later tug the Trojans ahead 53-52. The Huskies struck back with a 7-0 surge that Rogers snapped with a shotclock-beating 3-pointer to make it 59-56 at 5:40. USC would find itself in a six-point hole with 4:10 left in regulation, but a 6-0 rally generated by freshmen Pili and Rogers locked it up 64-64 at 1:55. Washington converted from the line to go up at 1:29, and then Rogers struck again with equalizing bucket that would stand tall through to the close of the fourth to bring up overtime.
In OT, teams traded small surges. USC got up 70-67 only to see Washington score five straight points to edge back ahead. Then USC made a 6-0 rally, capped by Caldwell's first 3-pointer of the day to make it a 76-72 USC lead with 1:18 remaining. Only free throws would fall for the next 1:10. Rogers drained a pair for USC to turn a one-point game into a 79-76 lead with 8 seconds on the clock. Washington would get a bucket in the paint with 1 second left, which was enough time for the Huskies to foul Aliyah Jeune on a long inbounds pass. The senior drained both, and USC had an 81-78 win in the books.
