LOS ANGELES – The No. 3 USC women's soccer team fell at home to No. 2 Stanford, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon in the team's Pac-12 opener.
It was the first loss of the year for the Trojans, who fall to 7-1-1 overall and 0-1-0 Pac-12. Stanford improves to 8-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference action.
The game saw a flurry of action early as all five goals came in the first half and four of the five were scored in a 12-minute stretch. Stanford broke a 2-2 tie in the 42nd minute, with Catarina Macario scoring what would end up being the game-winner.
Macario assisted Madison Haley in the 15th minute as Stanford started the scoring, but USC came back with a pair of quick goals, getting a strike from Tara McKeown in the 21st minute and then a go-ahead goal from Penelope Hocking two minutes later. Macario would score her first of two goals in the 27th minute to even things up before netting the winner just before the half.
The defenses settled in during the second half, but USC could never manufacture the chances it needs to even things back up.
