No. 25 USC Drops Five-Set Decision to UCLA

LOS ANGELES – No. 25 USC women's volleyball (6-5, 0-1 Pac-12) dropped a five-set match (12-25, 25-21, 25-20, 26-28, 15-12) to crosstown rival UCLA (6-4, 1-0) at Pauley Pavilion on Wednesday, Sept. 25. The loss moves the Women of Troy to 33-11 all-time in conference openers and is the first time the Trojans have lost a league opener as the Bruins' visitor.

- Sr. MB Jasmine Gross put up a season-best 21.5 points on 16 kills (3e, 23att) with a .565 hitting percentage, eight blocks (one solo) and a service ace.
- Sr. OH Khalia Lanier led all players with 17 kills and had nine digs.
- Jr. OH Brooke Botkin posted her fourth double-double of the season (17th career) with 14 kills (4e, 38att, .263) and 12 digs.
- So. setter Raquel Lázaro distributed 57 assists and had nine digs, six blocks (one solo), two kills, and a service ace.
- Fr. OPP Emilia Weske collected 11 kills (0e, 27att, .407) and had five digs and a service ace.
- For the Bruins, three players reached double-digit kills. Savvy Simo led with 14 and had the double-double with 15 digs. Mac May had 13 kills but also had 11 errors to hit .048. Emily Ryan had 10 kills and seven blocks. Cali Thompson also recorded a double-double with 34 assists and 15 digs.
- The Women of Troy ran away with the first set for a 25-12 rout. USC had 13 kills and hit .480 in the first frame. Lanier and Botkin each had four kills apiece and the Trojans racked up five blocks.
- USC was its own worst enemy in the serve-and-pass game and had 19 service errors and eight reception errors. UCLA led by as many as nine in the second and was rarely challenged in the third for a 25-21 win and a 25-20 victory respectively.
- The fourth set was tied 16 times before Weske tipped the final kill to the floor for a 28-26 Trojan win to force the fifth.
- USC went in front, 9-7, in the fifth but UCLA mounted a big 5-0 run to lead by three, 12-9. The Trojans closed to within a point at 12-11, but the Bruins closed out the victory, 15-12.
- The Trojans host Arizona (10-2, 0-0 Pac-12) at Galen Center on Saturday, Sept. 28. First serve is set for 7 p.m. PT and the match will be shown live on Pac-12+.
- USC fell to 59-54 all-time against UCLA and to 23-24 in road matches against the Bruins.
- It was the sixth time in the last 10 meetings that USC and UCLA have played a five-set match. The Trojans fell to 20-13 all-time in five-set matches against the Bruins.
- The Women of Troy won the previous two meetings against UCLA and remain 4-6 in the last 10 matchups with the Bruins.
- USC dropped to 1-2 in five-set matches this season.
- The Trojans fell to 33-11 all-time in conference openers, and are now 3-1 in league openers at UCLA.
