Four Trojans Help Team USA Qualify For 2020 Olympic Games
June 10, 2019 | Women's Water Polo, Features
A grand total of nine Women of Troy were in action for their countries at the FINA Super Final.
USC women's water polo was well represented in the first Olympic qualification opportunity of this 2020 quadrennial, with nine Women of Troy in action for four different countries at the FINA World League Super Final in Budapest, Hungary. There were four Trojans on the Team USA roster that plowed its way through to the gold medal, securing qualification for the United States at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Only the champion of this event was assured that spot in the Games, but there are several more qualification opportunities ahead in the run-up to Tokyo.
The United States squad included Paige Hauschild, Amanda Longan, Stephania Haralabidis and Kaleigh Gilchrist. The veteran of the group, Gilchrist won Olympic gold with Team USA in 2016. Hauschild, Longan and Haralabidis all have Olympic dreams of their own, and all four contributed to this winning run by the Americans. Hauschild and Longan just completed their 2019 campaign with the Trojans, and both were on USC's 2018 NCAA Championship team.
The event featured plenty of Trojan-on-Trojan competition, but arguably the fiercest battle came in the semifinals, where USC's four-Trojan contingent squared off against the Netherlands — home of another 2018 NCAA champ in Maud Megens. Megens scored twice against her fellow Trojans, but the Dutch came up just short in an 8-6 decision that pushed Team USA to the final. Megens would complete the event tied as the tournament's Highest Scorer with 17 goals.
Another current Trojan would join forces against a former Trojan for Australian. USC freshman Tilly Kearns capped up for the Aussies alongside 2013 NCAA Champion and 2016 Olympian Hannah Buckling, helping Australia finish fifth at the Super Final. Canada, meanwhile, featured two Trojan mainstays and NCAA champs in Joelle Bekhazi and Hayley McKelvey. Team Canada would take seventh place at the event.
