No. 2 USC Bests The No. 3 Bruins Again
April 20, 2019 | Women's Water Polo, Features
Trojans win their sixth straight against UCLA behind four goals from Paige Hauschild, who scored her 100th career goal along the way.
WESTWOOD, CALIF. — The No. 2 USC women's water polo team crafted a four-goal lead and fended off host No. 3 UCLA down the stretch to capture a 9-8 road win in the Trojans' regular-season finale in Westwood today. Behind four goals from Paige Hauschild and 12 saves from goalie Amanda Longan, USC proved up to the test in locking up the No. 2 seed for the coming MPSF Tournament next weekend in Palo Alto. With their sixth straight win over crosstown rival UCLA, the Trojans will carry a 23-1 overall record into the event after posting a 5-1 mark in MPSF action.
A busy first period saw the Trojans get the early upper hand, striking first on a smooth passing series that was capped by a blast from Paige Hauschild, which game the sophomore her 100th career goal as a Trojan. UCLA would level it on its next possession, but USC drummed up the next two goals — a rocket from Maud Megens and a sneaky 6-on-5 finish from Alejandra Aznar — to go up 3-1. After the Trojans had snuffed UCLA's first few power play chances, the Bruins broke through with a score at the post to make it a one-goal game in the final minute of the first. With 15 seconds left, though, Denise Mammolito unleashed a searing slider on a USC 6-on-5 to make it 4-2. UCLA had a chance to cut it to a one-goal margin with just second left in the frame, but Amanda Longan put a stop to a 5-meter penalty try by UCLA, and USC gripped that 4-2 lead entering the second. There, USC kept clicking. Another UCLA 6-on-5 opportunity went awry, and then Kelsey McIntosh found Megens for a skipper that tugged USC ahead 5-2. McIntosh would have the assist on USC's next goal, too, finding freshman Grace Tehaney for a left-handed finish that had USC up 6-2. UCLA got one to go at the other end to make it 6-3, and the defenses prevailed the rest of the half.
UCLA was awarded two 6-on-5 chances to start the second half, converting on the second and then earning another 5-meter penalty chance a couple minutes later. That one would make its way through, and USC's lead was trimmed to one at 6-5 with 4:25 on the clock in the third. After Hauschild and Bayley Weber combined forces for a defensive takeaway, Hauschild catapulted in her second goal of the day. Her third came a minute later, with Weber earning USC's first 5-meter penalty shot. Hauschild stepped right up and buried it, and USC was up 8-5 on the way into the fourth period. On USC's first possession, Megens would find Hauschild after running down a rebound, and the sophomore zipped in her fourth to lift USC ahead 9-5. The ball seemed to stay largely in the hands of the Bruins in the remainder of regulation, with UCLA converting on yet another power play with 6:02 on the clock. An even score came for UCLA at 2:38 to make it 9-7, and then the Bruins made it a one-goal game again after a wild stretch got UCLA a look with Longan out of the cage. It was 9-8 USC with 2:14 to go, but USC was up to the test. Longan made an enormous stop with 1:10 to go, and UCLA would later have the ball with 10 ticks to go. The Bruins' shot was filtered through the Trojan D and into the arms of Longan with 2 seconds left, and the Trojans had the victory in hand.
Now holding the No. 2 seed into the MPSF Tournament, the Trojans are set up to face No. 7 seed Indiana in an 11 a.m. quarterfinal game on Friday (April 26) at Avery Aquatics Center in Palo Alto.
