Trojans Play To Wild 10-10 Tie With Washington State
April 20, 2019 | Baseball, Features
The Trojans trailed by as many as six runs in the game, but the late rally avoided a loss for the home team and moved USC to 17-20-1 overall and 8-9-1 in Pac-12 play. Washington State moves to 8-27-1 overall and 1-13-1 in conference action.
After the Cougars scored a run in the top of the ninth, USC faced a 9-4 deficit with just three outs left. The Trojans got three straight one-out singles and then CJ Stubbs laced a pinch-hit single into left field to plate two runs and make it 9-6. Blake Sabol followed with an RBI single and Chase Bushor hit a sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game. A walk and an intentional walk loaded the bases for USC and Ben Ramirez was hit with a 2-2 pitch to bring home the tying run. A flyout would end the inning and send it to extras.
The teams played scoreless through the next two frames before Washington State manufactured a run in the 12th thanks to a leadoff double and two sacrifice bunts. The Trojans again had an answer, with Tyler Lozano reaching on a hit-by-pitch to start the inning and then later scoring on a double by Brady Shockey. That was it for the day, however, as a groundout ended the inning and the time limit was reached so the Cougars could catch their flight.
USC got an early lead in the game thanks to a two-run homer from Jamal O'Guinn in the first, but the Cougars would score six runs in the third, getting a grand slam from Dillon Plew in the frame.
