March 07, 2019 | Women's Water Polo, Features
Trojans beat the Anteaters 11-5 in Irvine.
IRVINE, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC women's water polo team shrugged off an early tie and poured out four unanswered goals to take control in Irvine, finishing out with an 11-5 win over No. 8 UC Irvine to balloon the Trojans' win streak out to 34 in a row. USC is now 18-0 overall on the year.
USC opened up in a 1-0 hole as UC Irvine got to the back of the net first, but the Trojans fired back with Bayley Weber, Denise Mammolito and Mireia Guiral rattling the cage to get USC back on top by the end of the first. The Anteaters leveled things with two early goals next, prompting USC to dig in again. After Courtney Fahey earned a power play for the Trojans, Grace Tehaney delivered the go-ahead goal, followed by another bullet from Mammolito and another power play finish from Alejandra Aznar to go up 6-3. The hosts would get a 5-meter penalty shot to go before halftime, and it was a 6-4 USC lead at the break.
In the third, USC roared to four unanswered goals — with Tilly Kearns, Paige Hauschild, Maud Megens and Elise Stein getting on the scoresheet to build out a 10-4 USC lead entering the fourth. There, UC Irvine struck early, but USC got a second blast from Weber and a couple nice final saves from goalie Amanda Longan to wrap up an 11-5 USC victory.
The Trojans now return to home waters to host San José State in an MPSF matchup at 12:30 p.m. on Friday (March 8) at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
