The Women of Troy and the Pride meet for the first time
LOS ANGELES – No. 21-ranked USC lacrosse (0-0) opens its seventh season with a first-time meeting against Hofstra (0-0) of the Colonial Athletic Association. The Women of Troy host the Pride on Saturday (Feb. 9) at McAlister Field with first draw set for noon PT. The game will be streamed live on the USC Pac-12+ portal. USC is 3-3 in all-time season openers and has won three straight.

Now in her seventh season, head coach Lindsey Munday (79-38) leads an experienced and battle-tested squad into a quest for a fourth NCAA berth. The Trojans welcome a pair of new assistant coaches in Duke men's lacrosse star Deemer Class and U.S. Lacrosse women's national team defender Katie Hertsch.
USC must replace major pieces of its defense from a season ago. Gussie Johns started every game of her collegiate career and departed Troy as the program's most successful goalie. She set program records with 484 saves and 277 ground balls. The Trojans must also deal with the loss of defender Lydia Sutton, who was largely responsible for the team's transition game. She had 44 ground balls and 27 caused turnovers in 2018 and finished her career with 137 and 91 respectively.
2018 IWLCA All-American and Pac-12 Midfielder of the Year Kerrigan Miller returns for her junior year after she led the team in goals (36), points (49), and caused turnovers (40). Miller also racked up 48 draw controls and 38 ground balls as a do-it-all sophomore. On the offensive side of the ball, The Women of Troy bring back seven of last year's top eight scorers. In addition to Miller, the Trojan attack includes junior Izzy McMahon (30g), sophomore Kelsey Huff (31g), junior Kaeli Huff (30g), sophomore Sophia Donovan (20g), junior Hope Anhut (18g), and senior Emily Concialdi (17g).
On defense, All-Pac-12 and IWLCA All-Region choice Jackie Gilbert leads the Trojans' back line. She led the team with 86 draw controls in 2018 and had 25 ground balls and 22 caused turnovers. Juniors Morgan Kuligowski (16gb, 10ct) and Natalie Byrne (17gb, 9ct) also return to a veteran defense alongside sophomore Lizzy Wagner (10gb, 5ct).
SCOUTING REPORT - HOFSTRA: The Pride (0-0) won eight games in 2018 and returns each of last season's leading scorers. Junior midfielders Alyssa Parrella and Alexa Mattera were named to the preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association team last week. Parrella led the Pride with 80 points last year and had team highs of 57 goals and 23 assists. She ranked second with 54 draw controls and had 21 ground balls. Mattera scored 40 goals and led the team with 68 draw controls to go with 12 caused turnovers and eight assists. In goal, Hofstra must replace Maddie Fields who started every game in 2018 and delivered 149 saves. This is the Pride's first game in the state of California since it played Cal in March 2012. While it is the first meeting between USC and Hofstra, connections run deep for the coaching staffs. Each head coach—Lindsey Munday for USC and Shannon Smith for Hofstra—starred at Northwestern for the storied Wildcat program.
