USC Suffers First Loss Of Season At Cal
February 01, 2019 | Women's Swimming & Diving, Features
Senior Riley Scott wins twice among six Trojan victories in defeat.
Senior Riley Scott won two events to lead the No. 14 USC women's swimming and diving team in their first loss of the season at No. 4 California.
The Trojans fell to 6-1, 4-1 while Cal improved to 6-1, 5-0.
USC dominated the breaststroke, with Scott winning the 100 in 1:00.95 and the 200 in 2:12.03. Sophomore Maggie Aroesty took third in the 100 in 1:02.65 coming in behind Cal's Ema Rajic's 1:02.29, while freshman Isa Odgers captured second in the 200 in 2:25.44.
The Women of Troy also overwhelmed Cal in diving, going 1-2 in both 1-meter and 2-meter. On the 1-meter springboard, junior Naomi Gowlett led the way with a score of 291.08 while junior Carly Souza finished second with 281.03. On the 3-meter board, the duo switched places with Souza's 329.85 good for first and Gowlett's 319.88 good for second.
The Trojans got off to an impressive start in freestyle, with seniors Elizabeth Stinson and Allie Wooden going 1-2 in the 1000y free with times of 9:44.18 and 9:47.35, respectively. Unfortunately, the momentum did not carry over to the shorter freestyle races, which the Golden Bears – led by sophomore Robin Neumann's first place finishes in the 200 and 500 Abby Weitzel's in the 50 and 100 – handled.
Junior Louise Hansson had a solid day for USC, winning the 200 backstroke in 1:54.53 and taking second in the 100 back in 53.00.
In her only individual event of the day, sophomore Marta Cisela finished second in 50 free with a time of 22.45.
The Bears swept the 100 and 200 fly with senior Katie McLaughlin coming in first in both races. Cal also won both the medley and freestyle relay and went 1-2 in 200 IM, though Scott came in third for USC, finishing in 2:00.96.
Tomorrow, the Trojans travel across the Bay hoping to bounce back against 5-0, 5-0 No. 3 Stanford at noon.
