December 03, 2019 | Women's Volleyball, Features
Senior OH Khalia Lanier becomes just the third Trojan to be named for All-Pac-12 honors four times in her career
SAN FRANCISCO – USC women's volleyball senior outside hitter Khalia Lanier (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Preparatory) and senior middle blocker Jasmine Gross (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) were each named to the 2019 Pac-12 All-Conference Team as announced by The Conference on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
Â
Sophomore setter Raquel Lázaro (Córdoba, Spain/IES Castilla) was chosen for Pac-12 all-conference honorable mention for the second year in a row and freshman opposite hitter Emilia Weske (Potsdam, Germany/Leibniz Gymnasium) was named to the Pac-12's All-Freshman Team.
Â
The selections of Lanier and Gross bring USC's all-time total to 76 All-Pac-12 certificates awarded to 38 different Women of Troy. Including all-conference selections preceding the Pac-12, Trojans now hold 99 all-league recognitions since 1977.
Â
Voted on by the league's head coaches, the Pac-12 honored Utah's Beth Launiere as the Coach of the Year. UCLA junior Mac May received Player of the Year honors and Washington State's Magda Jehlarova was named Freshman of the Year. Stanford had two awards winners: Morgan Hentz was named the Libero of the Year and Jenna Gray was chosen for Setter of the Year honors.
Â
Lanier's inclusion on the all-conference team makes her only the third Trojan in program history to be chosen for All-Pac-12 honors four times. She joins an elite duo of outside hitters in Samantha Bricio (2012-15) and April Ross (2000-03) and is one of just 21 Pac-12 players to ever accomplish the feat. Stanford has had 12 four-time selections. UCLA has had three players chosen four times while Arizona, California, and Washington have each had one in their histories.
Â
This season, Lanier leads the Pac-12 in kills (4.93 kps); ranks second in points (5.41 pps); and is eighth for service aces (0.28 saps). She moved into second all-time in school history for career kills (1,996), and attacks (5,338); third in points (2,224.0); and fifth for service aces (136). Lanier's 1,996 kills rank eighth in Pac-12 history and puts her just four away from becoming only the fifth player in league history to collect 2,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs (1,022). Entering the season, Lanier held a previous career-high of 29 kills in a single match. As a senior, she has logged four 30-plus kills matches and became the first Pac-12 player in the 25-point rally-scoring era to reach the 40-kill mark (second in USC history; fifth in Pac-12 history) in a match against Utah on Nov. 7. Lanier was twice chosen for Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors (Nov. 4, Nov. 11) this season and was named the Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week (Nov. 12).
Â
Gross becomes the Trojans' 38th player to receive All-Pac-12 notice. It is her first-career all-league honor in this conference. She was also a two-time All-West Coast Conference selection (2016, '17) as a middle blocker at Pepperdine. Gross ranks third in the Pac-12 for blocks in 2019 (1.39 bps) and her 170 blocks rank sixth in single-season USC history. She was named the Pac-12's Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 16 and was a member of the Trojan Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Â
Lázaro earned honorable mention status for the season year in a row. As a freshman in 2018 she was the Freshman of the Year and was also on the all-freshman team. This season, she ranks third in the Pac-12 for assists (10.68 aps) and is 12th in digs (2.74 dps). Lázaro leads the Pac-12 in double-doubles this season (20) and has had 32 in her career. She also now holds the distinction of having recorded the first triple-double by a Trojan in the rally-scoring era with 36 assists, 16 digs, and 11 blocks at Northern Iowa (Sept. 7). Â
Â
Weske has played in 124 of 126 sets as a freshman and averages 2.07 kills per set with a .276 hitting percentage. As a front-row player, Weske put up 331.0 points in 2019 and is the Trojans' 33rd Pac-12 all-freshman team choice. Only Stanford has had more (40).
Â
On Sunday (Dec. 1), the Trojans were selected with an at-large berth to play in the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. It is the school's 29th consecutive appearance in the national tourney (37th all-time). USC (17-13) will face Southland Conference champion Stephen F. Austin (31-1) in the first round at 5 p.m. CT (3 p.m. PT) on Friday, Dec. 6, at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas. In the other first-round match, top-seeded site host and Big 12 Conference champion Baylor (25-1) will meet Northeast Conference champion Sacred Heart (20-11) at 7 p.m. CT. Winners of each of the first-round matches will play in the second round on Saturday (Dec. 7) at 8 p.m. CT.
Â
Under second-year head coach Brent Crouch, USC faced one of the nation's toughest schedules and finished the regular season with a 17-13 overall record. The Trojans went 11-9 in the Pac-12 and landed in sixth place.
